I agree about the personal space. I don't want ANYONE in my space regardless of the size/stature. So I can see that as legitimate... but that has nothing to do with how you treated them based on their appearance before you got on that plane or even realize they were getting on that plane with you did it?

As far as being better than others, to elaborate further... If you feel you have the right to shit on someone because of their appearance, to me, that is an act of putting yourself above another, hence thinking you're better than them. I, in no way, meant the differences internally healthwise. They're obviously not a pilar of health if they're obese. I simply meant thinking of yourself to be somehow more pure of heart and soul because you have less junk in your trunk is fucking ridiculous.
Kim, I think you're missing the point. I know others have said it but here's my take on this topic and this thread...

Almost every time, being grossly overweight is a choice. That's reality. That said...

I don't look down on fat people (or anyone really, I'm 5'6") and go out of my way to insult them or hurt them. However, since I know a few things:

        1. It's almost ALWAYS a choice

        2. It's expensive to consume that much food

        3. Getting fatter leads to more health problems later

        4. Grossly obese people have horrendous hygiene

        5. Obesity and its side effects contribute heavily to our medical system's burden

I have a bit of an issue with it. People who are what would be considered heavy don't faze me too much. These are the folks that could stand to back off of the junk food/late eating/gorging/excessive drinking etc. but they are pretty active so it's never an issue.

When you start talking about people that have eaten themselves into disrepair, we begin acknowledging a horse of a different color. These are the critters that stopped giving a fuck a long time ago. These are the 'drains on society' as others put it. They cost you, me and everyone else umpteen dollars every paycheck. Obese people can file for disability, as retarded as that seems. And get it.

I don't think it's right to straight up insult people for being fat. However, I don't think it's right for people to vacuum up our resources via gubment healthcare.

            • I'm 5' 8" at 258lb last time I checked! I consider myself to be really fat, but have been hitting the gym minimum 4-5 times a week since the beginning of October! My friends say Im looking thinner but the scale doesn't seem to agree. I've been try to get in contact with someone for nutritional advice but have struck out a couple of times, I believe I just have to get my diet in check since I'm really determined at the gym, although I have been eating ALOT better than I used to!

I can help you with that but it's gonna take some will power on your end but after a couple weeks you wont have those cravings anymore.

Like I said before, it's all in the activity level and attitude of the person. My dad is chunky, but I am glad for it, he has had cancer since 93 and is still kicking the shit out of it, I would much rather see him at 220lbs than 120lbs. Again though, he is active, he played tennis well into his 50's, he can do anything.

My grandma is horribly obese, she has diabetes and does NOTHING to help the situation. She likes to keep her blood sugar above 250 at all times, doesn't walk anywhere, would much rather ride in an electric cart to get her blue bell ice cream. She can't drive anymore, she can barely move and she loves it, gives her an excuse to bitch and have people wait on her.

Those are the type of people that I treat differently and do not like. It may be shallow, disrespectful, etc, but I can't help the way I feel.

While I definitely have fat I could lose, I am considered obese by the BMI standard, I know that this doesn't probably apply to most in this thread, but I always have trouble when people use BMI for an indicator (such as the 25% of Americans are obese statistic).

Here is what I look like at 230lbs btw.
Then why the hell did you need my Hi-Lift jack? You could have just pulled the fence posts out of the ground.

You're throwing stones from inside a glass house. How much money a year does the war on drugs cost this country every year? That doesn't seem to detour you at all from indulging in that stuff.

But I will say this.....I feel for the people that simply cannot help themselves. Self control is a motherfucker. There are a lot of people in this world, and especially in this thread, that don't understand how hard self control can be at times. I have been a big person for most all my life. I have struggled with weight and exercise all my life. There have been moments where I workout everyday and eat right. And there have been moments where I don't give a fuck about what I eat and what I drink.

This past May I had a wakeup call. I stepped on the scale and almost broke that motherfucker. I weighed in at 334lbs and I am 5'11''. I can honestly say that I just wasn't seeing how big I actually was. I knew what I doing wrong but I did nothing about it. Since then I have been eating right, exercising, and living a much better life. I have managed to lose 70lbs in the six months that I have been into this. I feel the best I have felt in years and not to mention how fucking proud I am of myself.

When I talk to other people that ask me how I did it, I just tell them that it has to come from the heart. You can't just do it because you know you have to. You truly have to want to do it. Finally, I leave you with this. If I can DO IT....ANYONE can do it. For those that are struggling....good luck. For those that are doing it or have done it.....you can understand where I am with it all.
Congrats on your success sir. Only someone who had been there can appreciate how hard it was for you to do that. Keep up the good work.

It has nothing to do with me putting myself above them. It is a simple observation about people who eat themselves into disgustingness and then expect the rest of us to deal with it. I couldnt give two shits if someone thinks that I am an asshole for having opinions about something. But I never said anything about verbally abusing people because they are fat. Prejudices are better kept to yourself in that situation as it does no good. Heck, I cant even counsel obese people about it because their poor little feelings get hurt and they complain to administration. The whole system is set up to enable this lazy behavior. Be it obesity, welfare, health care, whatever...
I feel bad for you honestly and even worse for your patients you deal with, but sadly, I can see where your job would wear on any sort of compassion you may have had at one time. Seeing what people do to themselves on a regular basis and give you nothing but exuses, wishing to be medicated rather than putting in the work, would aggrivate anyone over time I suppose. I will tell you from experience though, being looked down upon or berated doesn't help at all, in fact it only makes it worse. Being overweight is a downward spiral, it's anger pointed inwards. It's very hard to pull yourself out of a dark place when you have people with a complete lack of compassion making it harder on you.

EVERYONE besides the Dalai Lama, Gandhi and Mama Theresa treats people differently to a certain extent based on the characteristics that they show you. For those of you who are perfect people, and love everyone, I applaud you.

For the people who want to get butt-hurt about this conversation, just change "fat people" with smokers, drunks, drug addicts and then ask yourself whether or not you would treat someone the same as another person who does not share those vices.

It's pretty simple. We choose to be overweight, or we choose not to be. We choose to smoke, drink, drive fast cars, play the lottery, and do thousands of other things that have negative consequences. People are allowed to judge you based on your actions, because unless they know you personally, that's all they can reasonably judge you on!

I'm fat and this is a public service announcement brought to you by Hostess.

It's interesting to see your take on it. You've been berating me for years, taking every cheap shot available to you and never once have you stopped to ask yourself or me if it bothered me or not. And now I see why.

All that being said, I'm an overweight person. Eight months ago I hit my darkest personal place tipping the scale at over 305lbs and I'm only 5'8 or so. Since then I have lost over 50lbs and still working hard at it. In September, I had a bad injury snapping my ACL in my right knee. Before, I would have let this be an exuse to just let myself slide into old habits. Not this time, I'm fighting back, it might have slowed me down a little bit, but I'll be damned if I would let it stop me.

The thing is, it's not because of all you people with the schoolyard name calling, or what anyone else may think. My motivation came from my family, my wife and little 2 year old girl that I want to be here on this earth for.

Motivation, there's the keyword on all of this. Alot of people, just don't have it. I've been there, when you lack it, it's impossible to make a lifestyle change until a person finds something that truly does it for them. I'm not perfect, I slip and slack sometimes, but to make an honest change is a marathon, not a sprint. Until a person is ready to make an honest change with legit motivation, they will continue to yo-yo diet.

It's true, I am fat. I'm still human, I have feelings like you skinny people do. I'm working hard at making the change, but I didn't get like this overnight and it won't come off that way either.

There isn't one skinny person in this thread who can come to the gym with me and make it through my workouts. I'll throw that challenge to anyone of you, especially you Dr.Dave, you come and train with me to see if you can last or not. You can't call me lazy if you can't do it yourself.

I will reach my goal of 215lbs and getting fit and happy with myself in 2011. I will not ever make fun or look down on another overweight person though. They are already suffering enough, they don't need me to add to it. By all means, help them if you can, some don't honestly know they can be helped, others plain just don't give a damn, that is true.

I take full responsibility for my current condition, it's my fault and no one elses. Now it's up to me to do something about it and not make exuses, but make changes.
