It's funny reading the posts here and the "Damn fat people" thread. The responses are very different but the topics are actually related.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Nailed it right on the head. Obesity and diabetes lead to heart disease.

I agree, but history has shown it doesn't work. Look at all the warnings on cigarette packs. The battle still goes on.

2nd hand smoke is a real issue. Tobacco smoke is fucking nasty.

But if somebody wants to drink a 64oz sugar soda? let 'em... if you limit the size, they're just going to buy more of them.
Google "high fructose corn syrup". I'd say it's just as bad as smoking.

Reread his post. He is saying 2nd hand smoke, meaning that us non smokers still suffer the health consequences. With corn syrup you are only fucking yourself over.

I get the whole healthcare debate, but I'm talking about DIRECT health effect... you smoke and my lungs are directly impacted. You drink a gallon of soda? it only effects my wallet... you drink 8 pints of soda because you're not allowed to buy a gallon effects my wallet EVEN MORE...

Smoking or sugar... it's all the same. If you don't like it, go somewhere else. It should be up to the business owner to allow what they want in their establishment. End of story. This is America for Christ sake.

The issue goes farther than whether it affects me or you directly. Obesity is an epidemic in the US. I am with the original poster. I'm torn between having the freedom of choice and the gov't taking action on a disease.

This is only at restaurants. You can still buy soda by the case, or two liter at the store and drink yourself fat at home. Or not like you can't buy 2 16oz sodas instead of 1 32 oz. You really think this is going to affect obesity? Give me a break.

This is America god damn it, if someone wants to eat themselves to death, they have that fucking right. Government needs to step back.

Where do you infer that what NY is trying to do will be a silver bullet solution? Do you think they expect to wake up the next day and find all fat people are now Olympic athletes?

What they are trying to do is to change people's eating habits. After reading the Damn fat people thread, you can't help but agree that a behavioral change is needed. We just have too many damn fat people around and many of them depend on the government for healthcare. Unfortunately, what NY is doing is construed as an infringement of freedom. And that's why the issue becomes so controversial.

Sure. I agree. But what do you do next when you yourself can't afford decent healthcare because 1000 fat fucks are being subsidized by your employer's health plan?

I agree 100 percent. I use to hate sitting at the table enjoying my gallon of chocolate milk and some old prick would start chain smoking at the booth next to me.

The same reason I am all for cell phone laws also or killing the signal in moving cars. Not because I love big government but because someone talking on the phone or texting puts my life in danger not just theirs. Same concept.
                        Whos your Daddy?

Until they sit next to you on a plane from an airline that has progressively shrank its seat width and leg room.

It isn't an epidemic, or a disease though, anymore than the war on drugs is an actual war. It's people making poor choices, which they are completely entitled to make in a free society. You can't legislate every facet of peoples lives. This country is seriously pissing me off since 9/11.

I think it's ridiculous, and I think it is going to have 100% ZERO effect on obesity.

You're just trying to justify your meth lab.

If I was cooking meth I'd be skinnier.
