There is a large demographic that is flat out afraid of dogs. It's the same demographic that is heavily recruited because of the "need for diversity". Dogs calls and snake calls are usually not the ones responded to by this group.

If you have read anything I have ever posted about dogs, you would not have mentioned questioning my stand on this topic.

The family will file a claim with risk management, and there will be a settlement. I have no doubt on this.

EVERY shooting is documented and sent up the chain as a "Critical Police Incident". If you have any thought that it isn't reviewed, then let me inform you on the process.

The supervisor (Sergeant) starts an investigation. This investigation is complete with witness statements and a full Crime Scene workup to involve a scale diagram and photos. The supervisor looks for policy/tactical violations and forwards a recommendation.

The completed investigation goes to the Lieutenant. The LT reviews the packet and either concurs with the supervisor, or adds additional information and makes a recommendation for discipline.

The LT forwards the packet to the Captain and he does the same.

The Captain forwards the packet to the Major and he does the same.

The Major forwards the packet to the Bureau Deputy Chief for final review/recommendation. If there is any discipline, it is sent back through the chain for the discipline.

Mind you, once the LT and above get it, they are looking to see if the officer screwed up. They are going to protect the city and offer the officer as a sacrificial lamb if they screwed up. There is no benefit to protecting a screw up that will expose the city to continued liability. Progressive discipline is the only way of due process that will terminate an officer.

I hate to comment on shit I have no firsthand knowledge on but the comments in this thread are fucking retarDed. Keep your dogs on a leash or in the back yard. Dogs are dangerous and very unpredictable no matter what breed or size to a point. I am a dog guy and my wife is a dog nut but god damn it we keep our dogs in a fence or on a leash. We live in the city, people are everywhere, and dogs do not need to roam around. I have never shot a dog but came relatively close the other day. Only problem was all the houses and concrete would have been bad (just in case I missed a round). This dog that had never bit any oneeeeee, bit the neighbor’s kid, and then went after his dad that went to see where the dog was. I got there and was just standing there watching it till animal control came and it charged me but turned around right at about five feet from me in full charge. I was about one pound of trigger pull away from unloading on it. It is also not that un common to be a mile or more from the original crime scene looking around for a suspect. The problem with this story is it so wildly different on both sides. I know it is hard to believe people lie but it happens when they talk to the media, and same goes for some POS police officers. All these, oh my gosh the cop was at the wrong house, and my unleashed, unrestrained, wild animal got shot, and now I am going to kill a cop comments are just stupid. You internet warriors sometimes just blow me away with your crazy comments. If my Mastiff was in the front yard, charged an officer, and got shot, then so be it. Wrong house or not, the front yard is still in the public, and it would be 100 percent my fault. I know this may shock you but not everyone likes dogs. More people than not are irritated with your un restrained dog charging them up for a friendly smell. I have no issue if the cop was looking for a suspect, got charged by a barking growling dog, and shot the dog, in the front yard. If he lied just to make his story sound better, then I have a huge problem with that. We have people get bit at least once a week by some ones dog that was not restrained. Only a handful of times have I actually heard the owner say, oh shit, yeah my dog bites the shit out of people. It is almost always, my sweet doggy has never ever even growled at anyone.

Even if I was not a police officer I would feel the same way about a dog in a front yard just FYI. Hell even responsible dog owners hate people that do not control their dogs.
