They didn't teach you in basic? Nevermind I saw above. When my mom and dad were in the Army they did basic swim survival stuff in Basic. Jump in with your ruck and rubber rifle with helmet on and swim the length of the pool. It's pretty easy though if you waterproof the pack properly you float.
That's because coming off WWII beach landings were a real possibility. Army doesn't typically deploy from the water now.
