The theoretical children no woman would give you would be pussies.

I enrolled mine in swim lessons. On the up side, the class suprisingly had a bunch of eye candy so I didn't mind paying for it.

I grew up on a lake and can't swim. My wife tried to teach me to float while in New Zealand and I just sink like a rock.

Aren't fat people supposed to be able to float?

You gotta hold your breath, then the floating will come

I did this to my oldest son at a public pool. I was astonished to see all the looks of horror from all the other milquetoast, helicopter moms and dads.

I've been a decent swimmer in my life, but never been able to float. From my perspective they are two totally different things and swimming is much easier than floating.

However, people who can easily float....just want everyone else to float. This is because they get all pissed off when you're swimming and agitating the water that they are floating in. That is entertainment for me when I see people floating in a swimming pool.

                        Not true for everyone.

When I was a kid I could float, but just barely. My entire body accept for my mouth and nose would be under water. Now when I try to float, I do take in a big breath, ease back, and sink. I gave it time once to see if I would come back up to the surface but I ended up just sitting on the bottom. I'm not a fatty though so I don't know why some people can float and others can't.
Annoying people, one post at a time!

Don't you have to at least float in the military or is that a Marine/navy thing only?

US Army has no requirements for anything with water - be decon and such.

At least for 95% of the jobs available - there maybe some boat type jobs that do require some training. I'm also not referring to any ...for lack of a better term....spec ops training that may require skills in water

Because of my moms fear of water (and her inability to swim even to this day), she had my sisters and I in swim classes as toddlers. Pretty rare in the early-mid '60's, but we all could swim like fish.

They didn't teach you in basic? Nevermind I saw above. When my mom and dad were in the Army they did basic swim survival stuff in Basic. Jump in with your ruck and rubber rifle with helmet on and swim the length of the pool. It's pretty easy though if you waterproof the pack properly you float.

You gotta hold your breath, then the floating will come
My natural point of buoyancy is my eyes just barely poking out of the water. I can float on my back for a bit. I've known some guys that float like a damn buoy with shoulders out of the water and not even trying.
