I have a pretty bad temper, had that been his verbatim response he'd probably gotten a nice hard punch to the throat.

I ordered the new pump off ebay to save about $550 over buying it local, but damn it's going to take a long time to get it clean again.

when a pool goes green its due to the lack of chlorine and the filters or sand is dirty or old or have holes which effect pressure as well.
my suggestion if you dont already know is.
clean the filter station make sure there is no holes in the filter if you have a filter style or cartridge system.
make sure the manifold is not busted and or make sure the manifold is seated properly.
if all checks out ok then verify pressure is proper,if pressure is not good then you probably need to replace the pump or rebuild it.
get your ph level really low with muratic acid.(this helps lower the ph level)
then shock the ever loving shit of it.
do not use chlor brite it has to much sanitizer in it, which not let the chlorine work properly especially when you need the chlorine to do its job.
then flush the filter system again and repeat same for shocking again.
if you already know all this
      SORRY

either way the chlorine should be able to keep the pool clear for longer than 24hrs.
i didnt run mine for a week while i was out of town and just had 2 floaters with 3" chlorine tabs in the pool while i was gone.

In some ways it is kind of depressing really. I can't imagine how bad things would have to get to let a 3 year old pool go like that and how shitty it'd feel to have to look out at it day after day. I rarely use my pool, but I def. keep it perfect year round because a: I take pride in my stuff, and b: it drives me nuts for it to be dirty.

I know a lot about maintaining a pool - I've been doing it on and off since I was seven. But I was really surprised to see a reasonably clean pool turn green that fast, I've never seen that. Obviously something is wrong with the water quality (pH likely), once I get it clean again I'll have it analyzed.

Our pool here was like that recently. Towards the end of last season the Polaris wheel broke off and the homeowner is a lazy asshole, so the pool started getting green. He decided to leave it be until this season and when it started getting warmer recently it got BAD.

I hadn't even been in the backyard for a long time as it wasn't pleasant to look at, but one day he told me stuff was swimming in the pool. I went to check it out and the ENTIRE pool was moving. There was mosquito larvae EVERYWHERE... it was ridiculous. I mean, if I pulled out a gallon of water from it, there would have probably been 100 swimming larvae. Times that by 30,000 gallons...

We ended up throwing about 5lbs of shock in there and used Cutter to spray the yard to try to kill any that were flying. Afterwards, drained the pool and started off fresh. It's all good to go now!

Be sure that your CY levels are where they need to be. If they are not, the sun will pretty much render any chlorine you put in useless.

i had to learn how to maintain my pool because i got ripped off the first month i owned it.
the pool water can get old.
especially if you are constantly adding a sanitizer (sanitizer does not break down in the sun like chlorine)
so it might be a good idea to do like i did buy accident once.
i was adding water to the pool one summer at 10am in the morning and left and forgot to tun the water off
                  10am-5pm water had been running
damn that water bill sucked that month

I would seriously contemplate draining it and starting all over if that were my pool. Even after he fixes whats broken.

cyanuric acid helps maintain or raise the ph a little
i never worry to much about that.
maintain ph levels and you will be fine.
muratic acid will be your best friend as will the chlorine.

                        my pool was 30k gallons

I agree. Even if the water somehow turned nice and clear, i'd be freaked out knowing how it was.

I'd just throw a few big ass chlorine tablets over the fence.
