I drove the STS-V today, and didn't love it. The power was adequate, but didn't feel anything like 469hp. Good pull, but I wasn't all that impressed. The interior was the biggest disappiontment though. The gauges looked straight out of an '89 Cavalier and the shifter was very bulky and just kinda shitty looking/feeling. The BMW's interior is 3x nicer.
They had a G8 GT there too that I drove, and while I liked the noises it made, it didn't feel all that terribly fast. I guess I expected it to run like my old friend's 6.0 GTO, and it just didn't feel as fast. It chirped 2nd gear every time when getting on it and using the manual shift option, which I didn't think was normal for OEM transmissions. Oh well, didn't love the car and won't be buying it anyways.
I like I'm going to look at 535i's and 550i's a little more...you guys have me worried about the maintenance costs, but I just can't find another sporty 4dr car in my $30k-ish budget.

Fix the wheels (there is a smorgasbord of great OEM Audi wheels to choose from) and you'd have a nice car for the money. Having a good independent mechanic is a must, but VAG maintenance issues are generally overblown and second-hand, and being on top of things goes a long way.

BTW your plan is flawed.
Once high line vehicles go out of CPO (and CPO'able range, IE: 100k miles) their value drops like a rock...
My recommendation?
Get an E39 M5. Mine was fantastic and frankly better put together than my new CTS-V (2002 vs. 2012, the M5 had 130k+ miles on it too). The V is faster... but thirstier and the tires are going to be much more expensive. You can find a good one for $15-20k. You can do most of the maintenance yourself as well.
1st gen CTSVs are pretty shitty IMO. Interior is trash, diffs are terrible, the car is not polished.... and they are not fast.
