When you upgrade to a new LTE phone

    http://www.freep.com/article/2012051...xt%7CFRONTPAGE

Verizon Wireless plans to begin eliminating the unlimited data plan it has provided customers who had it before the carrier introduced tiered pricing and dropped the unlimited plan for new buyers last year.

Fran Shammo, CFO of Verizon Communications, which owns a controlling share of Verizon Wireless, first revealed the change Wednesday at an industry conference and it was first reported by Fierce Wireless, an online publication.

Verizon is expanding the latest generation of its wireless network, called 4G LTE. Customers wanting to upgrade phones from their current 3G data plan to use 4G LTE will be required to sign on to Verizon's new data-share plan to be introduced this summer, Shammo said.

The data-share plan, whose pricing hasn't been announced, will provide a limited bucket of data that can be shared among family members or devices.

"As you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data-share plan," Shammo said. "A lot of our 3G base is unlimited. As they start to migrate into 4G, they will have to … go into the data-share plan. And that is beneficial for us."

Verizon dropped its $30-a-month unlimited data plan last July for new customers. But it let existing subscribers keep their unlimited data plans, even after their contracts expired or they upgraded to 4G LTE devices.

For a limited time, they still will be able to do that, at least through the new contract. Verizon wouldn't specify when the change for current customers will kick in. Until then, spokeswoman Brenda Raney said, nothing changes. "Unless Verizon releases more details about this, there could be some customers who might go ahead and try to lock in their current unlimited plan while upgrading to a new phone," says Roger Entner, analyst at Recon Analytics.

Still, the move is sure to draw the ire of "grandfathered" customers who remained loyal to Verizon to keep their unlimited data plans, says Ross Rubin, an analyst at tech research firm NPD Connected Intelligence.

Because the new LTE network is faster, it likely will drive subscribers to consume more data. Verizon's plan to herd all users into pay-as-you-go plans reflects its efforts to generate more revenue to pay for its new network, Rubin says. "They used the 3G network to prime the pump for data consumption."

Sprint and T-Mobile offer unlimited data plans. T-Mobile slows data transmission after 2 gigabytes for users with its basic unlimited plan.

I am sure AT&T will follow the same path in a few months as well.

Also, because the new iPhone 5 will most likely be LTE phone, and with all the new smart phones becoming LTE this is the best way for the wireless carriers to make a lot more money. LTE uses more data which will incur more money for the money hungry wireless carriers. Because, with the plans having less Data for the price, the more you will have to pay when you go over your allotment.

Have you read anything about Sprint's intentions for the future? That's who I have and everyone on our plan has unlimited data. I hope they keep it.

Verizon Ends Unlimited Data Plan For Existing Customers http://thedroidguy.com/2012/05/verizon-ends-unlimited-data-plan-for-existing-customers/ When Verizon Wireless decided last year to follow AT&T to eliminate its unlimited data plan for new customers, they allowed their exist customers to be ?grandfathered?

As of now, they haven't said anything about eliminating it since it's their biggest selling point.

Yesterday, the CFO of Verizon Wireless kicked the hornet's nest that is the Internet by unofficially announcing that VZW would be killing off currently grandfathered unlimited data plans as customers made the shift from 3G to 4G LTE. Judging by the company's response since then, he probably wasn't supposed to let that particular cat out of the bag just yet.

In a statement that the L.A. Times labels "backpedaling," but which we would call "slapping a band-aid on a gut wound," Verizon Wireless posted this last night:

As we have stated publicly, Verizon Wireless has been evaluating its data pricing structure for some time. Customers have told us that they want to share data, similar to how they share minutes today. We are working on plans to provide customers with that option later this year.
We will share specific details of the plans and any related policy changes well in advance of their introduction, so customers will have time to evaluate their choices and make the best decisions for their wireless service. It is our goal and commitment to continue to provide customers with the same high value service they have come to expect from Verizon Wireless.

So wait — are they getting rid of grandfathered plans or not? We're guessing that if the CFO had simply misspoken, then Verizon would be saying so.

It's possible that killing the grandfathered plans is just one option the company is considering, and therefore they can't officially say yay or nay, but when the CFO of the country's largest wireless company tells a room full of people that the goal is "moving everyone into a tiered structure data share plan," and that "everyone will be on data share," that sounds pretty concrete.

Sprint can suck it...I had sprint until a few weeks ago. They are still on 4G WiMax, which blows donkey nuts, data speeds, especailly near me, are slowing down significantly, to the point that an AT&T Iphone 4s clocked 4-5 times the data speeds I was supposedly getting with sprint on 4G network, if it was even working at the time.

I filed a complaint, an engineer called me and told me some crap about time warner using the same towers, and the signal was having issues, but that the fix was approximately 6-8 months away, and they would credit me 10 per month for the past six months of shitty data I have been getting, over the next six months....so I cancelled, got my $60 credit and $90 for my damn near perfect evo 3d phone, and cancelled my service. Over the past month, I can honestly say, I have switched from Sprint to AT&T, had better service, better data, and NO issues with customer service at all. My data speeds have at least quadrupled, and my reception is better overall in ALL of the areas I am and will be traveling for work.

That's just my opinion though, take it for what it's worth. I had been a loyal and die hard sprint customer for YEARS, but this data crap and WiMax garbage just pushed me over the edge.

OK, I'll end my rant now...

I've had my 4g verizon phone for at least a year with unlimited data, hopefully it will stay that way. This is such bs, especially since I've had their service since it was Cell One back before Alltel even bought it.

Except that I have Unlimited Data and don't pay any extra for faux-g or true LTE service. I've also never had any major complaint in regards to their customer service. And their coverage is better out here(West TX) when compared to Sprint, VZW, etc...

If they sucked, they sure haven't sucked on me!lol

exactly! I will be in west texas quite a bit for work, so I needed something that had good coverage all over north texas and into oklahoma. AT&T was the best one. Sprint was behind Verizon, and Verizon was the most expensive.

Everyone knows AT&T sucks! I mean, I've had the same exact bill for 4 years since getting my first iPhone (actually, I've NEVER had a billing issue since going to AT&T 7 years ago) I've NEVER had to call customer service, I've always gotten any equipment issues sorted immediately at the AT&T store without a fight. Those guys suck!
