I have never tolerated an employee that wants to argue. You should have policies in place for this conduct. Write up then term when your protected.

          Seriously!

I'm glad I don't have corporate rules to abide by.

Real simple solution to that. "This isn't an argument to be won. These are your problems. You can either fix them, or you can find somewhere else to be employed. That choice is up to you." Works like a charm.

I never liked paper trails but maybe this time is different.

I do not like the idea of holding things over someones head for simple mistakes or bringing other management into it either. I would rather handle things myself but it is becoming redicoulous.

The guy is smart he just is like a little kid. Blames everyone else for his mistakes, always has an excuse for everything instead of just owning up to it.

He has been late multiple times on top of all this and just this week I sent him home un-paid for the day. He seems to have never had anyone teach him about common work ethics...being on time, work in a timely matter etc etc..........

Sounds like he hates his job and doesn't care. Do him a favor and shit can him after the holidays.

You aren't holding anything over someones head. If they aren't being responsible, you are creating an out for yourself and company when the time comes. Not doing anything is only going to encourage his shitty behavior. It will get worse, and guess what? You won't be able to do anything about it because... You have no paper trail. There is nothing to feel guilty about if someone isn't doing their job. THEY requested the job, and you let them have it. If they aren't doing it, what are you paying them for?

Help him out the door. There are too many GREAT employees looking for a good
                          position.

The best one I ever did was, going down to EDD(Ca.) and got an app. for unemployment.
I filled it out that night for my future unemployed employee. The next morning I invited him into my office for coffee an donuts. As we were enjoying our morning refreshments, I handed him some papers to sign. He signed them and started to read what they were for. He said "hey these are for unemployment"! I said "Well yes, your pretty sharp"!

                          He never collected on me....
