Yup...but without the positive pressure from the ventilator he may have trouble keeping enough of his airways open to breathe effectively. They could extubate him to BiPap as it is easier to manage with an awake patient. Fingers crossed man.

They should do a test with him still intubated by turning off the airway pressure support on the ventilator (spontaneous breathing trial). If he can breathe through that small tube on his own, he can breathe without it in. But if he needs some airway support, they shouldnt have to reintubate him...they can use BiPap.

I am sending this e-mail to ask for prayer for my precious son, Benton. He was admitted to the hospital yesterday. As I write this, he is in ICU... fighting for his life... He has been sedated because he is on a respirator to help him breath.....due to both of his lungs being completely filled with fluid....It is asperiation pneumonia....and there are other issues he is dealing with. He often has this...but....this time is the worst!!! He has dealt with his illness head on from the start, not letting it get him down. Benton has fought a couragious battle for several years. He is a remarkable man and loved soooo much by his family and friends. He is such a special, funny, GOD loving man...my "wild chld" on his beautiful motorcycle that he loves so much. It is heartbreaking to see him go through all this, but, I know GOD has a plan for my baby. His birthday is right around the corner...Dec. 18th.
Thanks so much and Merry Christmas to all,
Gwen
My brother is a good man. An old outlaw biker turned into a biker for Jesus. Still wears the long braided ponytail and rides his Harley almost daily. A Vietnam vet Airborne Ranger. He has cheated death 100 or more times due to his blood pressure that drops frequently to almost nothing. Many times you cant even find a pulse. His medical problems are many, but he has always come back.
Please keep him in your prayers. His birthday is tomorrow, (sat).
Best wishes to him.
David

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and the support you provide for me. King...I haven't over looked you. Thank you for your prayers. It means a lot to me.
The Dr's have tried to let him breath a little on his own yesterday and today, but he is not yet able to do so. All we can do is wait in hopes that he is able to pull through this.
I'll keep this updated as things change. Again, thank you.

Well, they pulled the ventilator out the other day and started Bi Pap. This all sounded good, but he took a turn for the worst yesterday. Mom and Dad spent the better part of Christmas Eve with him. In fact, they didn't get home till 6:00 this morning, (Christmas day).
Benton had said before that he did not want to be on a life support just to keep him around. Mom asked him yesterday if he wanted them to put him back on the ventilator and he said no.
He has become septic (sp) and just isn't doing good at all. Long story short, all the family will gather at the hospital tomorrow (Sunday) and all the plugs will be pulled.
I guess we all are ok. Its too hard to see him lie in that bed day in and day out without getting any better.
Just keep us in your prayers and thoughts as we say good bye to my brother Benton.
I love you brother.
