Probably would have talked to the manager before it was time to leave..

That or they should have shakes their empty glass with ice in it harder...

I don't eat out much anymore, however I do throw my barber an extra 12~15 each time I get a cut.

I see both sides.. I will say this though.. Even though we say 8 or more on our menu I wont grat them if i knew they were upset about something whether its the kitchens or the servers fault.. But if it was just your normal party and everything went fine ill grat them if the server requests it.. I guarantee i could get out of a grat if i got shitty food, service etc.. But if the server gave good service, kitchen nailed everything correctly (or if the manager corrected it immediately), I see nothing wrong with gratuity

Most nice restaurants charge the waitstaff a percentage of their sales that goes to the bartenders & hostesses as a tip out. If you are gonna stiff them on a tip, which is totally acceptable at times, have the courtesy to pay 3% so your server does not have to LOSE money on you.

I am sofaking fortunate that I no longer work in the food industry

                also let me add..
If its slow and i see my server messing around talking or on their phone i tip quite a bit less than when service is a bit slow and i see the server is super busy/overwhelmed..

And when exactly would you call this theft of service, since they were still there? They did not leave, so there was still a posibility that they may pay. Technically a crime had not been committed yet.

                    LOL....

If they are bitching because they were "locked in" because they did not pay, then I think it is clear that they were not going to pay.

Sure, they may not have payed. But you cannot lock them inside because you "think" they aren't going to pay. I would have let them leave, then called them in.

I guess since Matt has vanished it was only a matter of time before someone stepped up to take his place.

This has to be one of the silliest things I have heard.

When do you pay your tab and TIP? At your table when you hand over your card or cash. If it wasn't paid then and they removed their ass from the chair I think it is pretty safe to say they WEREN'T going to pay.......

If you are in a parts store and someone is on the other side of the store, grabs something and runs to the front door, but you get in front to block them, is it safe to say they were going to steal whatever it was or were they practicing their 50 yard sprint?

You know that malls and dept stores have policies in place that state it is not shoplifting until the "suspect" (because they have not commited a crime yet) leaves the property..then it is theft.

Maybe next time I am at a restraunt with friends, we can all get up at the same time and go to the RR and see if any of the staff tries to tackle us...

The fact that they were still inside does not show me intent. The news story stated they paid their bill, minus the gratuity, and were arguing with the manager about the gratuity. There is a reason that the police didn't do anything. Also, if they would have walked out not paying the gratuity you are looking at a class C.
