To be honest, I never gave him a fair chance to redeem himself. I grew up doing fire restoration on homes, and have seen some really quality work, and a ton of really shitty hack jobs. the segment of his show that I saw, he was looking at a half finished bathroom remodel, that the contractor quit on the home owners. That Holmes guy was liking for anything he could find to bitch about, but the contractor actually did good work. So he found some things that could have been done differently, entered spray on insulation, etc. they pulled an electrical box down, and I shit you not, he said "look at this, they used a wood screw to attach this to the stud" and even my wife caught it and asked what other kind of screw you would screw into a wooden stud.
So we wrote that show of as theatrics, and have never attempted to watch it again.

Jeez, everyone knows you would use 16 penny nails for that!
I'd get one that has no affiliation with the realtor selling you the house.
The guys recommended to me had no affiliation with him. Just ones that have always done a good job over the years that customers gave good reviews to.
I went with Burgess Home Inspections. He pointed out all the bad stuff and even gave some cool "off the books" pointers (like the terminix termite "traps" around my house actually attract termites instead of preventing them - I dug them all up)

We just had an inspection done by Bill at Burgess a couple weeks ago on a house we're buying. I was really impressed.
