  • Where to buy sheets of laminate for counter tops?

I bought some remodel take out cabinets that will work great in the garage and I'm going to join two sections of bottom cabinets together and make a work bench out of them by topping them with some 1 1/2" mdf. I want to cover the top with a good solid color laminate but don't know where to find it. Ideas?

Honestly, I didn't even think about them. I went to HD at lunch and that was a wasted trip. If I could find it, I want the exact same blue laminate that's on my counters at work. This stuff has been abused for 20 years and has held up very well.

Care to elaborate? I've done my share of remodeling over the years and don't see laminate as being a huge challenge. I've got the means to cut it, route it, etc. Which method works better, dowel rods, or wax paper?

Way back when, we taped the area to be cut, then flipped it over and cut it going though the bottom. Not sure its the best way, but how we did it.

clean the hell out of the surface, spray both the laminate and the surface, use the dowel method and get a good roller. i prefer to roll the dowel12 inches then pressure roll the lamand work your way out. i take it for granted this is not a bullnose counter. do the top first then do the edging. if you do it opposite you will break the edging everytime you slide something off the counter. get wax to use for your router bit and buy a laminate bit, other wise you will burn the hell out of it. next you need a really good good lam file, about 150 bucks. i have one you can borrow. there are sorts of little tricks... if you can send a pic of what you r laminating i can give you some cuts

Cool. I keep those in mind and may hit you up when I get the supplies together. It will just be a piece of 60"x30"x1.5" mdf. With all the work involved, I may just look at some pre-fab tops as well. It's going to be for the garage, so I don't want to put a ton of money in to it, but want it to hold up.

If it is a color that someone has in stock it is cheap. For them to custom build you a pre-fab it is re-fucking-diculous! I built mine for around $50. They quoted me $400!!!!!

HD has 6' sections of pre-made counter-top for around $60.

It might also be cheaper to buy a scratch and dent countertop. Slap it on and go.
