  • Has anyone travelled to Switzerland?

I need tips and pointers since everything is written in Deutsche. Also any places to visit worthwhile? I'll have plenty of time to burn there, if anyone knows of any trekking or similar in or around Zurich please post here.

Time to start freshening up that German.

Most places speak English but it's always good to say a word or two in the local language. If you're on the side that borders Germany, they speak Swiss-German. If you're on the side that borders France, it's Swiss-French. Same rule for the side that borders Italy. Kinda like Canada. Kinda like Texas.

There's lots of history there, like the rest of Europe. Lots of stores selling Swiss Army knives. Go figure. Every town or city you go will have some interesting history.

The train system is expensive but quite clean and efficient. They have a food cart that goes through the cars. Taxis are decent too. Mostly Mercedes and BMWs.

The two times I was there, we flew into Basel Airport which straddles France and Switzerland. Be mindful of which path or doorway you go into. You might end up in France.

They use Swiss francs but Euros are also accepted. Some places accept US dollars.

I went last year, though I was only there for 3 days. It's beautiful over there, everything is clean and the people are friendly. As propellerhead mentioned, the trains are awesome. They are always on time, very quiet, and you get to see quite a bit of the countryside. The area I was in spoke only Swiss French, but there are areas that speak German and Italian.

There's alot to see and do, as far as things in the Zurich area, I'm not really sure what's available.

There is a rotating restaurant(Piz Gloria) in the alps that was in "On her Majesty's Secret service"(Bond Movie). My parents went there back in the 80s.

I don't know what the food is like but the view is breathtaking from what I was told.

At the very least ride a cable car into the alps for the view.

Just an FYI, stuff is EXPENSIVE out there. I ate at McDonald's one night (after 10pm everything is closed) and for the 6pc Chicken McNugget meal it was just under $10. Next day I had a pizza at a local italian restaurant, and a bottle of water and it was ~$25.

Going to second what Kenny_Stang said. I just got back from Ljubljana, Slovenia (passed through Zurich and had to spend the night). It is absurdly expensive there. Burger King was around $15 for a burger and drink. A bottle of coke was around $5. Bring enough cash (to exchange...though some places do take dollar/euro/chf) or make sure your card works there (expect the foreign transaction fees that come with using your card overseas).

              As of now:
              1 US dollar = 0.9159 Swiss francs

Flying into Zurich, plan to get grilled by security. They take entry pretty seriously; however, leaving was a breeze. No idea on sites. I spent a night there exploring the airport after being dicked over by United on my return flights. If you plan to leave there and puddle jump somewhere else, avoid flying Adria Airways (I doubt you'd use them anyways).

It is ridiculous over there. I think I paid near $3 for a bag of Lays or should I say, "Walkers".

I have an exchange student friend in Switzerland. I hoped to make it over 1 day but so far no dice. From her pictures and the sounds of it, it's a very beautiful country. The mentality there seems to be very laid back and easy going compared to our hustle and bustle american lifestyle.

America is very direct, under the pressure, and stressed out compared to every other place I have had the opportunity of working with....
