You do it right at an early enough age and you don't have to worry about these situations.

I can snap and point at my 3 year old and she immediately stops what she's doing and walks away. She knows that if I have to stop what I'm doing or get up from my seat that an asswhooping is coming.

At one point she got the idea that she would tell that a spanking didn't hurt, guess what, the next swat damn sure did. She doesn't do that anymore.

It's all about starting young, maintaining a consistent discipline regimen, and following through with threats. Telling them you are going to spank them and then putting them in time out or not spanking them because they stopped what they were doing the second before you get to them is not acceptable. If I say I'm going to spank and have started the process of grabbing her or spanking, she's getting a spanking.

Cliff notes: kids need consistency and asswhoopings at an early age.
