Thinking about making a move out to the lake: Rockwall/Heath area. My wife works at Pearl and Central in Dallas. Just wondering what the commute is like coming across the bridge(s) during rush hours. Thanks for any help/advice.

I live in Fate, and commute to downtown Dallas (Oaklawn & 35E) 4 days a week.
I leave anywhere between 8:30-9a and don't find traffic to be that bad. It takes 40 minutes for me door to door. There are the usual spots that i can generally expect things to back up, but not more so then coming in from any other side of the metroplex. I used to drive in from Lewisville, and even though this takes 10 minutes longer, it feels like a much easier drive to me (less freeway merges causing issues). Every once in a while some idiots will wreck on Ray Hubbard bridge and I can tell you that is for sure a nightmare since there aren't any other routes, but it doesn't happen very often.
As far as foundation issues, I don't think it's any worse then anywhere else. We just came out of one of the worst droughts in history, if you didn't water your foundation you probably got screwed. My house is fine.
I really like the Rockwall area, it's grown up a lot with a lot of shops moving in even over the last 4 years I've been here. The Harbor is also pretty cool. There are quite a few religious people in the area, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It still has that small town feel to me, like Lewisville when I was growing up.DamonH

When there is a wreck, you're screwed. It's like being on an island, no where to else to go. Other than the the HIGH ASS prices on stuff out there, it's pretty nice.Vortex rear stand $75
8.8 410s. $50

but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy shit!!!.. what a ride!"

We have lived in Rockwall for nearly 10 years. We love it, could not imagine living anywhere else. Was voted best place to raise a family by Family Circle magazine.
Made the commute to the exact area, Bryan and Pearl for 7 years. About the same as posted above, no accidents about 45 minutes in rush hour. Leave about 6:30a and commute is about 30.
If you have any question shoot me a PM and I will do my best to answer. My buddy has been out here for 20 years.

Thanks for all the feedback. We've been south of Dallas for many years, but now I have daughter who lives in uptown Dallas and one in the Rockwall area, who has our only granddaughter. I can build my houses about anywhere there's land, so I can be a gypsy pretty much. My dad and I have a "medical devices" company, too, but I handle that out of the house. wife on the other hand, makes the morning trek into downtown Dallas. Ironically, she's the one that really wants to move. We are raising my nephew, a 4th grader, so schools are important, also. We've driven all over the area (Rockwall, Heath) and feel like $275k-$325k will buy a nice place right now. We really like Heath and the area south of I30 off of Ridge Rd. There's currently construction, but will be really nice in the future.

There is a subdivision on I believe acre or acre and a half lots off 1139 I noticed a builder's sign that said starting in the $300s. I have walked a couple of houses in that neighborhood and they are NICE, would have thought a million easy. There are actually 2-3 really nice neighborhoods in that area. Equestrian Meadows, Quail Run are a couple off my head. I know you are a builder so a lot may work out for you as well. There are a few 5+ acre lots down the road from me, could get you the info if you wanted. All the areas I mentioned go to the same elementary that my son goes too, and we could not be happier with it. My wife is on the PTA board, and is very involved in the school. Would go to the new Rockwall/Heath high school, although I am not sure where the new one would be built, and if that would change when they are ready.
