My son is really in to skating, and asked Santa for a new board for Christmas. He goes to the skate park 3-4 times a week, and in the past has only had cheapie boards from Toys R Us.

Back when I used to skate, I got all my stuff from Fast Forward in the Irving mall. Are there any skate shops left? If so, where? I don't want to drop a ton of cash, but I'd like to get him something nicer than what's available at Toys R Us.

There's still one by North East Mall. When I was into it, Fast Forwards was still one of the best shops with both variety and fair prices. Who knows what the kids do now. I imagine you can get a better price online though.

Zumiez (formerly Fast Forward), and Industrial both in the mall. For a decent board with a graphic you're looking at $130ish but it will be a real skateboard.

I would go to Index in Mid Cities if you want a brick and mortar store.. There is also a Zumies near Northeast Mall but their skate counter is somewhat limited.

Really though, you can get some good deals online. I hate to say it, because I would rather you support your local skateshop.

The great thing about Index is that it is operated by skaters and they are really helpfull and friendly. You can go in there and tell them what you are looking for and they will be great help in getting you into the right gear given your budget.

BTW, you can still buy a good skatebord for a decent price. One of the ways is to just get a brand deck rather than a pro-model. You can get some basic Element decks for a pretty good price.

Any advice on what trucks are worth a shit these days? Bearings (I used Apex, can't remember what series), and wheels?

They should have some packages with discounts for the holidays that include everything (deck, bearings, and wheels).

I am not that up to date on the various brands available, unfortunately. I have Indy trucks, which I know are good, but they are also one of the pricier brands. Same thing with wheels.. I like Bones SPF wheels, but they are a little more expensive than most. Those are the things that a good skateshop will be able to help you with. You can tell them your budget and they can get you into the best product for the money. Complete boards that are pieced together can run anywhere from $90 - $160 or more. Just determine how much you are willing to spend and go from there.

Bearings - A safe bet would be Bones Reds.

Maybe try looking in a recent issue Skater type magazine. Find a good deal for an online shop from there.
