Ever witmess a weird change in someone

This guy I know underwent some kind of... frankly bizarre change. All for the better. But I just never saw this before. Its usually the other way around . He used to be a lazy fat slob whodidn't care about lying or screwing someone over, and he smoked and drank and did drugs. Was a jerk, smelled bad, etc. He rarely had a job. And when he did, he never kept it very long. And no I am not going to go into names.

He was pretty much just a mooch. But then all the sudden, he... changed. It was like lightening struck his head and reformatted his brain or something. I hadn't seen the guy in about a month cause I realy tried to avoid him. But when I saw him again he had lost much of the weight and had enrolled in college. Saw him again a little over a year later (which was last week) and he had lost all the weight, cleaned himself up, moved out. Got he own place.

Even had a girlfriend and had joined a band a became a musician! I was like holy crap. He was much nicer and had worked hard enough on he school that he was already having associates degree, and persuing bachelors.

I have known this guy all his life and now all this? Its weird. Anyone else ever see anything like this?

My cousin went downhill, basically overnight. He had a drug phase in high school, but had moved past it, hadn't done anything in years. Had a decent job w/ my best friends construction company, was pretty much the #2 guy - was interested in the usual things -sports, beer, women, working out etc - he was basically my best friend, we had a lot in common and hung out pretty much every day.

Then, one day, at 4 am - he wakes me up, telling me he has a "great plan". I say, what's that - he says I'm gonna quit my job. Turns out, that isn't much of a plan. That was about 5 years ago - he hasn't worked a day since then. Now, he lives in a 5 room hot-sheets motel behind a dive bar with two other losers - a 60 year old hippie lady, and a 19 y/o screw up. The three of them panhandle at the off ramp by their hotel so they can come up with the $25 or whatever it is to pay for their room for the night.

He did start smoking pot pretty heavily again right before he went completely sideways, but I think there is more going on. Several people have suggested schizophrenia. He thinks he is a Reiki Healer, and thinks he's going to go on Oprah and get her to publish his "book" which is basically a diary filled with mostly jibberish. Some kaballah references, some NWO / conspiracy theory stuff, some techniques for personal trainers (he thinks he is one because of a cert he got on the internet in 6 wks), and other assorted nonsense.

At this point, I think he's already to far gone to ever recover. If he ever decided to work again, how can you enter the workforce at 30 with no references or experience? He can't use my buddy's company on a resume, because he quit without notice. Even if he could, how do you explain not working for 5 years because you decided to become a bum?
