  • File for Lost Title

Can you purchase a vehicle with a bill of sale and still file for lost title? Or is the only person that can file for it is the one who's name is on it?

not completely true. If the owner signs a bill of sale and you bring that in, you can file for a bonded title. I did that with my 70' grande

Last one I did no bill of sale was required.

Scribing of the vin, two appraisals, and then go to a main tax office and they will have you fill out a packet and give you more paperwork. When you leave you go to an insurance place and pay for a bond for the certified value of the vehicle( 10 percent IIRC). Take that bond paperwork and your packet to the local DMV or back where you got it and they will transfer your title and send you the bonded. As long as no claims are made on the vehicle in three years you can pay five bucks and get a regular title after three.

I had to do a bonded title on a 93 Mark because the previous owner died and could not sign. It took a day of driving around to get the process done; pain in the ass.

Yeah I bought a car the other day with no title. I gouged him $500 just for the trouble of it. When really just wanted the car for parts

This is good info. I just went through this process for I car I bought in CA and lost the title before I transferred it. This is exactly what I did, and it was a pain in the ass.
