    metal shop in high school we were only allowed to use the lincoln stick welders at first...we had to take a 4x4 pad and weld bead after bead, then we stacked the beads on top of each other, ending up with a pad that was about 2'' thick with welding beads.. the pad was then cut in half with a very large 50+year old mechanized hacksaw...the teacher woud inspect it for air pockets and as long as there wasnt toomany he would let us move on to one of the mig welders

    If you know nothing about welding then I would go buy a stick welder and learn it yourself...you can weld just about anything with a stick once you get the hang of it...guys that weld gas pipeline use gas powered stick welders, so they must be ok..granted these welders are 100% duty cycle and produce almost flawless welds
