From Heathrow take the channel tunnel to Paris. From Paris buy a train ticket to Brussels or Amsterdam. DO NOT miss out on the low countries. Belgium is like France without the attitude, and the Netherlands is a neat place as well and every Dutchman I have ever met speaks English. From there you can just hop on a train and go wherever in Germany you want.

I would skip Italy, it is like a 3rd world country. I shit you not, it is like Mexico with a smattering of fancy architecture.

What about a place to stay. Are hostels still the cheapest? What is the average $$/Night?

Yes, but hostels suck ass and some have a curfew. I have slept on trains, gotten cheap hotels via the internet, and have done the hostel thing. The money you save on hostels is offset by how shitty the experience can be.
