It's illegal for a scrap yard to buy any rail, spikes, or tie plates from an individual. Otherwise every crackhead around would be ripping up rail to sell it. Plus since steel is so high the railroads reuse most of it in other places.

Stephen your best bet would to find a railroad welder and ask him for a piece. They always have small scrap pieces on their trucks.
