Just to let you all know, none of the appliances out there are any good. Most appliances these days won't last past 5 years. The older appliances will last the longest, so get them fixed before buying a new appliance.

There is some truth to the second part, but the first sentence is incorrect. everything is made with cheap Chinese shit these days, but some companies actually have customer service and take care of things.

Sub Zero comes with their own set of problems too, trust me. There isn't a manufacturer out there that doesn't have issues.

If you can live without water & ice in the door - the old top/bottom fridges are SO much cheaper.

Last fridge I bought was 4 years ago....my then wife just HAD to have a side by side with water & ice in the door. Bought a Whirlpool at Lowes for $1100, but I noticed the same size top/bottom types were around $600-$700.

Plus most of the complaints & problems you see pertain to........the ice & water in the door !

Yep. And if you will drop $7000 on a refrigerator without batting an eyelash, you've got more money than sense. Don't get me wrong. I'm a complete kitchen geek. I'll spend stupid amounts of money on gadgets or cooking equipment. It's flat out stupid to spend that on refrigeration. For that kind of money you could buy commercial that uses expansion valve over cap tube, and has adaptive defrost.

Well, what pisses me off the most about a lot of things is that cost does not equal quality AT ALL.

Hell, I'd spend 7K on a fridge if it was cool and reliable for 20 years. Just seems like you'd spend 7K and get the same reliability as you would in a 1K fridge.

I've got a 23 year old ge side by side that's still going strong. Had to replace the "cold control" once because the fridge would not shut off, and also had to replace the water solenoid for the ice/water thru the door. Other than those repairs and cleaning the crap out from under it
occasionally it's been rock solid. A friend has the same basic fridge that's about 18 years old and it's been trouble free as well.

Had a sub zero and now a viking, love both of them, never had any issues with either. The subzero was in Wisconsin when i was still there.

I paid $1300 for their "top model" died 2 weeks after warranty while I was out of the town for the weekend. Came home to water all over the floor, and fridge/freezer of spoiled food. The part to fix it cost $800, and labor was another 150. There was a 7 week wait on the part.

Fuck that company.

Do you have the Bosch stainless unit with the controls on the top of the door? I installed one of those for my mother in law and it is baller to the extreme.

Yep that's the Bosch I got. It was the quietest on the market. My house has an open floor plan and I was tired having to turn up the TV with the dishwasher going.


btw...talking about this and bragging about my dishwasher shows I'm turning into an old man.
