Im reminded of a couple times I had to drive a 8ft grounding spike into the ground. My back hurt like hell! I couldnt imagine trying to hand dig a well.

Really cool link, thanks for sharing. Would be fun to try if you are the tinkering type and don't write everything you see off instantly before trying it.
If all else fails though, my uncle drills wells here in texas and would do mine for free.Tera 4:1 + 4.88's = Slowest rig on here

Mine is about 45' deep, 3' across, and was hand dug decades ago. Was finally able to get a pump on it last summer and it too has some of the coldest, good tasting water around. Did the math on it and reserve is about 500 gallons or so...

We put in a geothermal system at our place outside Terrell, went down 250ft and didn't touch a water table. They went through a bunch of shit too, needed major equipment to knock all the holes out (12-15 holes).
Just because you dig, doesn't mean you'll hit anything.

The geothermal really did pay off for us. House was a two story colonial, around 3200 sqft including a converted garage/game room with vaulted ceiling. Kept the house at 68 year round (never had to touch the thermostat) and the avg mnthly bill was about $75 a month.
With the rebates, it took about 2 years to break even, but it really did pay for itself. It was really a near zero maintenance system. I think initially we had some issues with one of the heat pumps, but it was easily repaireable due to the quick disconnects.
House stayed super comfortable and didn't have any noisy air units outside to disturb the peace and quiet.
If I ever get a house with acreage and space to do the field i'll do it again in a heartbeat.

One of my customers in Jewett builds some water well drilling equipment, most go to Africa but he has sold several here. I think he said he has a few wells on his property that are between 250-400ft. He said it is actually cheaper for most people to buy the equipment and drill it themselves than paying someone to do it around here.
