We have used a well for close to 100 years on our ranch near Hallettsville. Up until about 15 years ago it was soley pumped by windmill into a cistern. We converted to electric pumps, but still have the windmill system on backup.

I'm assuming you have to be out of an incorporated area for geothermal system? And probably has to be pre-construction?

In south Arkansas a well runs around $35-45 a foot. Most here are around 180-250'.

Biggest problem here is finding someone to drill one. That, and an old neighbor had to have two drilled because the first one wouldn't clear up/flow enough water. I had a piece of property I wanted to build on that would have to be on a well. I weighed all options and even though there was no cost associated with the land, I really didn't want to end up with $20k+ in a well for water.

My parents live on 6 acres with 2 water wells that put out 40+ gallons a minute each. The water taste ok, but it is hard as shit, you do not want to get it on your car.

My 'rents have a 600' well. I can't stand the fluoride laced poison found in College Station.

I can get their name if anyone wants it. Great people..3 man company. They say they stay quite busy because of their work/price.

I think original quote was $4k with pump. Adding up my parents added a 2500gal storage and an extra pump to pump the water to the house for the sprinklers. Just under $7k total

Generally speaking yes on the first part and no on the second. There are people who convert after it is built, but as with a lot of things much easier to do so during construction.

The house I'm in now has geothermal and it's nice so far. I'm more interested in summer and how it works there though. One NICE advantage is you don't have a loud outside unit.

However, you still have to have a well insulated house (Mine is SIPs) or it's going to be running a lot anyway.

Bad for your teeth, and the hard water out of most Texas wells is useless for washing anything.

well if you guys are interested, my parents used Affordable Water Wells. It was $20/ft minimum 200' with pump and install. If they get enough water at 160, you still pay for 200'. That pump is around $1200 by itself. Storage tanks are all basically the same price 1500,2000,2500 gallon storage.

They did a great job and there was a slight hiccup in the beginnings and they came right out to fix it. One pump burned up from being submerged and they came out and replaced the pump next day.

Actually went out to the land today and the well is done. Haven't heard from the driller so don't know where the hit or how deep they went. He drilled my neighbors and its at 440'

The well at my mom's house had the same foul smelling water. I added a 1 hp swimming pool pump and sand filter filled with zeolite to filter the water in her storage tank and it got rid of the smell. The pump is set to come on all throughout the day and may tun a total of 3 hours per day.
