If not it's going to be a real uphill battle for you I think. You gave up any physical stuff you had and even with it, it could be difficult.

If there is no recording/documentation though, you just have a clorox smelling trunk that could've been caused be negligence.

Personally, the most I would do is find a lawyer willing to write a letter with his/her letterhead with some strong wording. More than once that has gotten results for me without them calling my bluff. Past that, it may be cost prohibitive to go much further with it.

Why not just pay to fix the vehicle yourself? If it's a health concern I would probably just take care of it and look for clorox to re-imburse. Probably wouldn't take more than pulling the carpet and cleaning it up.

Yes, actually. I have never had to do anything like this so I didn't know what to do other than what they told me to do. I guess I'm too trusting? I only expected them to pay out after they said they would, so please excuse my ignorance.

This. I would even venture to do some research and see if this has been a common occurrence with these containers. I bet you aren't the first person, and they pretty much assumed responsibility because it is an everyday thing for them.

Yes, I have a case number and written correspondence from them about it
