I would shoot for in ground veggies so the birds don't get them. Watermelon is also a good choice. Btw,theres nothing wrong with tulips since it's in the front. You might get points with your girl, but the constable will probably mock you.

I could eat fried okra or roasted corn with damn near every meal. I don't know anything about canning, but if you can can hot sauce that's what I would do and then grow just enough of the other stuff to eat it fresh and give away what you can't eat.

Throw down some weed & feed on the rest of your lawn while your out there. It might be too late for a pre-emergent application, but you could scalp it and throw down some post. I really don't expect any freeze this year so go for it.
