I used to wait table many many moons back in Chicago & let me just say this guys.

Servers tip out 1.5% of their Sales to the Bus Boy & 1% to the Bartender & sometimes a percentage to Food Runners!

Also servers only make $2.13 a hour which is BS! That wage has been the same now going on 20 years. I think its time to give servers a raise.

But when you leave a tip like $1.33 on a $133 Bill! The servers Tip out on that Bill alone is $3.00 bucks. So the guy not only fucked the server. But took money out of his pocket!

I agree some Servers suck & dont deserve a good tip. But at least leave 10%

I got horrible service at Taco Diner last week. It took around 40 minutes for us to get our food. The guy got a big zero for a tip from me. My coworkers all tipped him something out of sympathy. I don't do that shit.

If the service sucks, that's on the server, and there will be no tip left. I don't care how much you rely on it for your expenses. Sounds like you're in the wrong industry if you can't effectively wait tables, or communicate to your customers why their service is bad, and even have your manager come talk to them.

I usually tip 20-30% for good normal service. I usually tip 50% for amazing service. I don't tip under 20%, if it's something that deserves less, they get 0.00.

I waited tables for 3 years in undergrad. It's well-known that the church crowd and black people don't tip.

My daughter waited tables during college and they hated waiting on either of those groups. It's not that they tipped poorly, they just flat out don't tip.

That said, I've left a couple zero's on tabs in my time when the server just flat out sucked. Having worked in the industry many moons ago and most recently my daughter working in it, I understand both sides and it really takes a lot to piss me off to that point.

I had a server sit at a table and talk to another server, laughing, drinking tea, and checking her pager. (this was a while ago) Another server saw us getting mad, and came buy filled our drinks. He brought our food and apologized for her. Then at the end of our meal, Our waitress brought our check and asked if we wanted desert. That was the one time I've ever asked to speak to a manager. We got our meal comped, she got no tip, and the waiter that stepped up got a $20 bill.

Jenn and I had something similar happen to us at our local Olive Garden. Our waiter felt the need to handle other matters at hand instead of our initial drink orders, as well as, our food order. In both instances another waiter had noticed our growing discontent for the situation and jumped into action with a swiftness.
We were using a debit card, but wanted our tip to go to the fellow who went out of his way to take care of us. When I signed the bill for our dinner I left a lengthy note for the shitty waiter on why he got no tip. I also gave him some pointers on how he could conduct himself to keep himself from getting burned out due to the frequency of disgruntled customers that I had noticed while eating that evening.
We tracked down the other waiter and ordered some dessert to go so that we could write him a tip worthy of his actions. He was working the slow side and decided to swing through the busy side to see what he was missing out on. We also made it a point to let management know how awesome he was.

I don't expect much from my server. Hopefully they get the order right, hopefully they keep my Dr. Pepper filled, and hopefully they don't bother me incessantly asking whether or not I need anything else every 2 minutes. That's all I expect, and that will get you a 20-30% tip. If you go above and beyond, then you can expect up to a 50% tip, but that takes some really good service.

I like laid back wait-staff. Not so laid back that they forget to do things, or seem like they don't care, but laid back enough that they aren't all uppity and formal and getting in your face. There's a line.

It takes a lot to piss me off when it comes to service at a restaurant but once I get there, I'm there. You are either getting 20% or jack shit.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
