  • Wisconsin family takes up crusade for Idaho POW

BOISE – A family from Wausau, Wisconsin, 1600 miles from the home of Bowe Bergdahl, is rallying for his return.

“We don’t know him, and we don’t know the family, but we are proud Americans. And that is what we have in common with them,” said Brenda Weber.

Bowe Bergdahl, a 25-year-old Army sergeant from Hailey, was taken prisoner two and a half years ago in Afghanistan. He is the only known American prisoner of war currently being held.

Rick and Brenda Weber traveled all the way from Wausau to Russia to bring home their son, John. He became an American citizen three years ago.

“He pointed to the American flag, and he said he tasted freedom,” said Weber.

John’s first holiday on American soil was Veterans Day.

“From that moment on, he just grew in pride and patriotism. He has immersed himself into our culture and history,” said Weber.

Now, John and his family are making it their honorable obligation to raise awareness. They are circulating a petition to bring Bergdahl home, and it needs 30,000 signatures in order to present it to Congress.

“That way we will garner the national attention we feel with all the grace and dignity that we can in order to bring awareness that this soldier has to come home,” said Weber.

Back in Idaho, at the Capital City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 63, thoughts of Bowe Bergdahl never stop.

“It’s first and foremost for us because we want to bring Bowe home,” said Boise Valley POW Senior Advisor, Lance Stephensen. He has been in recent contact with Bowe’s parents lending his support. “This is the kind of thing that really helps. It really does, and it’s amazing,” he said.

Since Bergdahl has been gone, yellow rubber bracelets made by Bowe's own grandmother hang on the wrists of 5,000 supporters.

“The bracelets mean all the difference in the world because if people don't see something to remind them, they forget,” said Stephensen.

In Wisconsin, the Weber family won’t forget.

“I am a mom, and Mrs. Bergdahl is a mom, and that is all the reason I needed. And my son for 12 years didn't grow up with freedom, and her son doesn't have it, and we want to try and do something about it,” said Weber.

The Weber’s petition has been signed in 13 different states, but they would like to see some Idaho signatures on it as well.

The deadline to submit it to Congress is March 27th.

The Webers are also planning a candle light vigil on March 30 in Wausau to honor Bergdahl and pray for his safe release.

I feel sorry for the guy STILL being captive even after taking into consideration how it came to be. Back in the day I felt like it was tough shit, he did it to himself but nobody diservse this treatment.

The reality is, a few people with the right looking Letter or Authorizations or Common Access Cards can fly into a certain air base in Afghanistan (name withheld), look like they belong there and after walking 75yrds disappear into the rest of the base. With the right contacts in the SOCOM community weapons are a dime a dozen. A truck is just as easy to steal on base.

Off base, cash will buy you everything....someone will sell him back.

I have been away for a few months but last I heard his name had dropped off the radar and mission creep was back to business as usual.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

We should rip that country apart looking for him. Yes he was an idiot to walk off the base and who knows why he did it but we don't leave our own.

They did halt all missions to search for him. But that was back then and yeilded nothing but wild goose chases.

I agree a new fresh set of eyes on the ground now is what it needs. Without kid gloves they need to toss every hut until he is returned.

I'm very Roman in my view of warfare. We stop killing them when our own is returned

I am very old testament in my view of warfare when it comes to dealing with muslims; we stop killing them when there are no more to kill.

Is there a chance we will ever try to recover this guy?
Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

..........and we just traded 5 Gitmo detainees for him.

WASHINGTON — U.S. officials say the only American soldier held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed and is in U.S. custody.

The officials say Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release was part of a negotiation that includes the release of five Afghan detainees held in the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The negotiation between the U.S. and the Taliban was mediated by the government of Qatar.

The 28-year-old Berghdal had been held by the Taliban since June 30, 2009. The officials say he is in good condition and able to walk.

The officials insisted on anonymity in order to describe the details on Bergdahl’s release.

Not worth it. Those 5 are going to kill a LOT of people. You don't negotiate with terrorists for the same reason you don't give a mouse a cookie.

I agree. We can always kill those 5 on the field of battle much easier now. I agree that we do not need a US Soldier left behind in enemy hands. I agree, he will be a wealth of information and valuable intelligence for our drones and SOCOM targets.

I am sure he has a lot of very tough questions to answer and will probably be given a choice to separate from the Army or face charges of desertion. I don't see anyone bringing him to charges but I have been wrong before. I just don't think this administration needs another headache to deal with.

I am going to be looking for his book deal and his first interview released to the free world.

5 years he'll never get back. Damn. Kind of an odd thought, but does he get back pay for all that?

I am just curious what super powers these 5 possess that the rest of the Haqani network crew don't? Did they belong in Gitmo? Sure. Can we still kill them? Sure. Will they change the field of battle? I would bet 99.99% not.
