F-16s intercept unauthorized small plane, later found to be carrying marijuana stash near Los Angeles

Two F-16 fighters intercepted an aircraft Thursday after a flight restriction violation near Los Angeles, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said in a statement.

The privately owned Cessna airplane entered the same airspace as Marine One, the helicopter that was ferrying President Obama, around noon. A law enforcement official says police discovered about 40 pounds of marijuana inside after it landed at Long Beach Airport.

The Secret Service says the president was never in any danger. There was no immediate word on arrests related to the drug discovery.

The two fighters, under the direction of the bi-national American and Canadian command, quickly responded to the violation. After intercepting the aircraft, the NORAD fighters followed it until it landed, and it was met by local law enforcement without incident.

NORAD works closely with homeland defense, security and law enforcement to prevent air attacks on North America by responding to unauthorized air activity.

In safeguarding the sovereign air space of the U.S. and Canada, the command may monitor, shadow, divert from flight path, direct to land and/or destroy potential threats, the statement said.

NOTAM or NoTAM is the quasi-acronym for "Notices To Airmen".

NOTAMs are issued (and reported) for a number of reasons, such as:
hazards such as air-shows, parachute jumps, kite flying, rocket launches, etc.
flights by important people such as heads of state (sometimes referred to as Temporary Flight Restrictions, TFRs)
      closed runways
      inoperable radio navigational aids
military exercises with resulting airspace restrictions
      inoperable lights on tall obstructions
temporary erection of obstacles near airfields (e.g. cranes)
passage of flocks of birds through airspace (a NOTAM in this category is known as a BIRDTAM)
notifications of runway/taxiway/apron status with respect to snow, ice and standing water (a SNOWTAM)
notification of an operationally significant change in volcanic ash or other dust contamination (an ASHTAM)
software code risk announcements with associated patches to reduce specific vulnerabilities

I am guessing that the pilot barely knew how to fly, much less knows what a NOTAM is. Just some drug mule.

most of the time people don't check, there's a website to check for TFR's. We had a student and a photographer violate a VP TFR and were escorted to the nearest airport and met by S.S/PD.
