Cops today...

It's often said that I jump on cops every time I get the chance. Well, I thought I'd give an account of today. Bought a truck from the Colony today and had to drive it all the way back to my house in Cooper. Along the way we passed state troopers, city cops and county cops with no plates on the truck (the owner took them off as he was scared we'd run the tollway and he'd get the bill). Not a single stop.

I appreciate it.

Yeah, knew that was coming. I had the DV plates in the new truck from my other vehicle that I am going to have transferred to the truck, had my insurance card in it but was very nervous about the trip.

I don't think most cops even pay attention to plates. We have bought 3 different trucks at auction in Waxahachie and driven them all back the 5 hours to Midland with no plates of any kind without incident.

So do you expect to be dragged out and beaten anytime you get pulled over? I mean, I understand you have injuries from battle but not every cop is out to split your head open.

There is a myriad of reasons that you could have been ignored.

The LEO could have been on his way to a call, on the way to the bathroom, or more importantly, on his way to eat.

I get to work before 5am, and when 11 rolls around, I'm headed to eat. I don't care if someone's plates or inspection is expired. I'm grumpy when I'm hungry, and I don't want to deal with petty stuff at that time.

Some guys just don't like working traffic.

Bottom line is you will never know why selective enforcement did or did not go your way at any particular time.

I've been pulled over several times and only once did it go badly. One time I had my .50 rifle with a case of ammo in the back and the cop saw it, asked questions about why I'd need it and we wound up bs'ing about Iraq.

Then I got stopped for improper lane usage and come to find out, I blacked out for a few seconds. I got escorted home.

Then there was the one who saw me driving in the left lane, came up in what he called 'pursuit mode' and almost slammed into the back of my truck because I indicated and pulled to the shoulder immediately and he spent 20 minutes yelling at me for 'stopping too fast.'


When I'm stopped, I answer yes and no sir or ma'am, I keep my hands clearly visible, my windows are down, dome light on, radio and truck off and I hand them my CHL, DL, insurance and military ID. But despite repeated requests, no one searches my truck without a warrant or probable cause. That usually ruffles a few feathers but I'm always polite about it. That said, as they're walking up to the car, I always look at the uniform and the shoes. If the shoes didn't match, bad things would more than likely happen.

I've got friends like that. I pull trailers with expired or wrong tags/lights not working and drive stuff with expired registration/inspection so often it doesn't even bother me anymore. I've never once been pulled over for a trailer and only a couple times on truck inspection/registration.

In Iraq if a cop walks up to you, they are in uniform. Insurgents can get the uniform but always forget the shoes. Real cops have those nice, shiny shoes and insurgents have tennis shoes or sandals. Chalk it up to PTSD but I check out the shoes and then up to the badge and THEN the rest of the officer.

And how could it go bad? Either I absolutely refuse to cooperate, I call 911 and report what's going on to verify the officer or drive to where there are plenty of people around. When you've been taught to take in your surroundings, you do exactly that. Cops without their uniform shoes? Insurgents who want to kill me and those in my car.
