My oldest and best buddy struggled with drug addiction since we were 12. He lost the battle in 2006 from a heroin OD. I've had 2 other good friends die from OD's and I have 2 people that are very close to me that have been clean & sober for just over 5 years and almost 31 years. I say all of that so that y'all understand that I've been around addiction my entire life and learned a lot about it as well as 12 Step programs. Drug and/or alcohol addiction is a disease, plain and simple. There are 2 main schools of thought on how someone "catches" the disease. The first is that you're born with it. The second is that it happens through use for some people. Regardless, it is what it is. A number of y'all said that it's willpower or something similar. It's got nothing to do with willpower I assure you, regardless of how much or long you used drugs or drank excessively. If you were able to just put a plug in the jug and stop drinking or stop using drugs, you clearly don't have the disease of addiction. Count yourself lucky as there are countless others that aren't so fortunate. I could go on and on, but since I'm kind of late getting into this post I'll end here for now.

ive done all kinds of shit, but never felt addicted to much of anything
however ive got a brother thats clearly an addict. He's literally sitting in jail right now, mostly due to his behavior on meth.
i don't know how its possible but whatever he has, I never had it.
I could start and stop using any drug i ever wanted. Him , but him - no freaking chance.... an addict by design im afraid.
It sucks cause my whole family has a rediculous amount of effort and money wrapped in trying to 'save him', all to no avail.
he'll be in jail until 2016, and I have little doubt he'll return once he finds drugs again...
now by court order before ive had to go to AA meetings and such. Now being the good little boy i am , I actually went to them and tried to learn a lot.
Well i did , and I agree that by the stories i heard and repairs I've heard in people's lives - Addiction is a disease.
It's a mental disease which is currently untreatable, apparently except through AA.
Show me one bit of evidence of anything in history helping addicts like AA program has. There is nothing out there that compares. And AA IS A FAITH BASED PROGRAM. Besides obviously completing numerous steps required by the addict to right their life again, they will need faith to endure and resist the disease which afflicts them.
Medical science is such a crock of shit in many things....(like GI issues as well)
I swear sometimes I think the internet > doctors

This worried him and he sat me down one day and promised me to never smoke another one if I would promiss the same . He was about 65 then and from that day till the day he died he never touched another one . Thats 47 years of 2 packs a day , unfiltered cigs and he lived the rest of his life with my Grandmother sitting in the same room smoking . I said to myself after that there is nothing a person cant do if they want to .

My mom (grandmother) is in her 70's and had been smoking since she was 10. Last year she put down her smokes and walked away from them without a problem. She lives with my grandfather who chain smokes which I am betting doesn't make it easy. My brother has done meth, my father still does and I think I'm addicted to the internet.
Everyone's addicted to something. Find something cheapI wear a Fez. Fez-es are cool
