no shit? I can think of a few habits I'd like to rid myself of.

I thought it was hokey horse shit but I needed to quit. I'd always told myself I'd quit by the time I was 35, and as I said, I've tried every method and failed. Patches, nicotine gum, lozenges, cold turkey, vaping, I read Allen Carr's Easy Way multiple times, etc. I'll be 35 in May, so at the recommendation of a colleague, I have hypnosis a shot. I'm a believer now.

And yes DJ, you can see a hypnotist for anything behavioral. The guy I used is one weird guy. Really weird. But he worked his craft and convinced me.

During my first session, he told me he had a guy that came in half a dozen times and still couldn't quit. So the guy told him the only way he was going to stop is if he became physically ill every time he smoked. By ill I mean stomach in knots, nauseous, etc. So the hypnotist did what he did, and the guy quit. Since the first session didn't work as well as I had hoped, I told him to do that to me. That half cigarette I smoked? I got sick. Real sick. Explosive shits, stomach in knots, and vomiting. It was so bad it woke me up out of a dead slumber. That's all the convincing I needed that I was done smoking cigarettes, and it made a believer out of me.

Don't get me wrong. It was still hard, and still is at times. It isn't like the cravings disappear. But it's programmed in my mind that I'm a non smoker, and little things like seeing the color red remind me of that every day.

I referred a coworker, and it didn't work for her, but I don't think she let it. She was also having serious coughing bouts during the hypnosis, and he told her he wasn't sure it would take given her break of concentration due to the coughing fits.

          • Unhappiness is the cause in my opinion.

A study done by Bruce Alexander actually showed this with rats.

You have a rat in a boring cage with no rat friends and you give him two choices of drinking water, one with cocaine added. Unhappy rat with no friends gets addicted to the cocaine water. Then, you take unhappy rat out and put him in a cool cage with rat friends and he stops drinking cocaine water. Makes sense

            • Reading stuff like this, and they are similar to many other stories I've heard from others, I guess I find it kind of hard to take it all in.

I've never tried any drugs at all in my life. I've never even taken a drag off of a cigarette. Yeah I've inhaled second hand smoke, it wasn't anything great. I'll have an occasional drink but that's about it.

Since I was a teenager and knew that my other friends were smoking and some doing other stuff, I guess I never understood the appeal? Why did I need to spend money on something that I didn't need in order to get through life? To "fit in"? With who exactly and why? I think a lot of it might be due to social issues people have.

Example: you're out on the town looking to get laid, so what goes hand-in-hand when you're at a club or bar? Why you gotta have drinks of course. But why? Most people I've observed it's because they need it to loosen up due to nerves getting to them, a fear of sorts, that rejection from someone will be too much to handle and thus ruin their night. And that's where the alcohol comes in.

Don't get me wrong, I've received the benefits of alcohol more than once when I was younger but if I ended up in situations like I've read in this thread that many of you have described, the damage that would do to my family would be too much for me to handle. No real reason for me to even get started.

If you did not have some credibility with years of other posts I would've called you full of shit. Only known two to try and fail, but your mention of basically not being "into it" - is likely their cause too.

Trust me, I thought the people I'd talked to who had used hypnosis were full of shit too. I didn't think it was going to work, and basically did it to appease my boss and to give myself another excuse of "well, I tried..."

It's a work in progress. Just hoping to improve a little bit every day. And every day I don't smoke, makes it just a little bit easier.

                  • You should hear the stuff they say to you while under hypnosis. I've not been to a hypnotist, but I listened to a cassette tape years ago... I thought I couldn't be hypnotized, but shit I went right out while playing the tape. Then I got curious about what they were saying, so I stayed walking around and talking out loud while listening to it.

After the "you're getting very sleepy" preamble, etc., they get down and dirty, telling you how nasty smoking is, how people talk about you behind your back because your clothes stink, your breath stinks, etc., really amplifying every negative aspect of it and making you think (subconsciously) that you're a real piece of shit for smoking.
