WTF are range hoods so high?

Geez, I can't get over the ridiculous prices I have been seeing for range hoods. I'm not even talking about the large fancy stainless with halogen lights. I just need a simple under cabinet range hood with a fan and lights. Prefer stainless, not not a deal breaker. $250 seems steep considering that a above the range microwave with build in fan starts around $200. Its not like there is any sophistication with the hood alone. Most I am seeing are $500 and up.

I am starting to think of building one myself. If I can get access to a sheet metal brake, some nice stainless and I already have some suitable fans.

Lol, not even. Of course it depends on size and whether it's a type I or type II. In a few months I'll be delivering $110,000 worth of exhaust hoods alone (that doesnt include fans or duct work) to a State run Culinary School. Along with another half a million in equipment and refrigeration.
