Local cops buy plots next to Josh Powell’s sons to block him from being buried there.
Josh Powell took his sons with him to the grave, but the local sheriff's office is making sure he won't lie next to them for eternity.
Pierce County sheriff's officials put up their own cash to buy two burial plots next to the spot where Josh Powell's sons now lie together in a single casket in order to block Powell's family from burying him next to the boys, local radio station KIRO reported.
"The bottom line is, Josh Powell will not be near those two boys," Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer told afternoon drive-time hosts Ron Upshaw and Don O'Neill on the "Ron & Don" show on Wednesday.
Troyer and Sheriff Paul Pastor combined their own money with cash from a local Crime Stoppers program — a nonprofit that makes money through fundraising — to purchase the plots next to the slain boys, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5.
The pair is asking for donations to help cover the costs of the plots as well as a memorial to honor the boys, which they say will run between $4,000 and $5,000.
"This is to keep Josh away from that area because for years and years and years... people are going to visit those graves and we want to make sure it's a safe place to visit without anyone having to be angry about seeing Josh anywhere near it," Troyer said.
Pastor also said they were thinking about reserving one of the plots for Susan Powell, the boys' mother, who vanished in 2009 and is presumed dead.
Josh Powell was a suspect in her disappearance before he chopped his sons with an ax and then blew up his house on Feb. 5, killing them and himself.
On Wednesday, his family visited the Woodbine Cemetery and selected a plot up the hill less than 100 feet away from the slain boys, The Associated Press reported.
The grave had already been dug up and covered with plywood, but the final sale was being put on hold because Susan Powell's family has sought a restraining order, city officials said.
"For him to be buried near those kids is just unthinkable," Anne Bremner, who represents Susan Powell's parents, Charles and Judy Cox, told the AP.
"For God's sake, for them to lose Susan first, and then the boys, and now this? Just give these people a break."
On Tuesday, Josh Powell's father, Steve, submitted paperwork to Pierce county authorities invoking his Fifth Amendment right not to answer questions about his missing daughter-in-law.
Steve Powell is currently jailed in Pierce County on voyeurism and child porn charges.
He was named a person of interest in Susan's disappearance after Josh Powell's death, and had previously claimed that he and Susan had a romantic relationship before she ultimately ran off with another man.
