If you're still boasting a grandfathered-in unlimited iPhone data plan, AT&T's just effectively said they're going to stop honoring it. If you use more

If you’re still boasting a grandfathered-in unlimited iPhone data plan, AT&T’s just effectively said they’re going to stop honoring it. If you use more than 2GB of data per month, AT&T will now throttle your data speeds down to completely unusable levels.

AT&T has been forecasting for a while its intention of throttling heavy data users if they fall within the top 5% of unlimited data users, and started sometime in December. When the first users were throttled, though, they were using 10GB+ of data a month… an excessive amount by most estimations (although again, AT&T has signed a contract with them promising them a la carte data, so hardly beyond the pale).

Now, though, unlimited customers who merely go over 2GB in a billing cycle are finding themselves tossed into AT&T’s data throttle hell.

Over on his blog, John Cozen describes his own experience being throttled at a mere 2.1GB a month. When he contacted AT&T, he was told firmly that there was no mistake, and that going over 2GB per month on his unlimited data plan automatically made him one of the “top 5% of data users.”

The only way to get his 3G speeds back? Predictably, AT&T wanted Cozen to change to a tiered data plan. And Cozen is not alone.

So here’s the new world order, AT&T “unlimited” customers. AT&T has decided that you may very well be an unlimited data customer, and recognize that by law they must honor their contract with you. However, they never promised you that you’d be able to get both unlimited data and fast data: you have to pick one or the other.

AT&T treating customers like dirt? What a surprise from the wireless provider voted worst carrier in the country for two years in a row. I smell a class-action lawsuit, frankly. This is just a complete insult to unlimited data customers, almost all of whom have been loyal customers since the original iPhone.

Has AT&T’s new data throttling policies affected you? What are you going to do about it? Let us know in the comments.

i have had att for about a year and i use my phone daily(a lot) for web/emails/etc. and i have never hit 2gb. hell i have only used 65% of 2gb 3 times in that year, and i only know that because i got a txt saying that i was down to 45% left of my 2gb data

i know people will not agree with me but i personally dont like the assholes using 10gb a month, it slows down the rest of us normal users! now i know people will say "well if they didn't want it unlimited they shouldn't have offered the plan". well i'm sure when they created it they didn't realize there would be assholes sucking as much data they could from the network just "because they could" ...and wtf are people doing to use up 10gb a month on their phone? oh that's right, they have them hooked up to their laptops...

      anyways, that's my .02

It's not unusual for me to use 5-7G/mo, and I've never tethered it to my laptop.

Its cool. As soon as google expands their fiber optic network, ATT probably won't be in the ISP business anymore. And good riddance.

Apparently nothing. I didn't actually read the article. Haha!

Although, ATT has said the exact same thing about home ISP's plenty of times.

The AT&T community forum has been sunset, we have compiled the list of new resources that you can use to find answers to any AT&T related question.

This morning I got a txt from att I am in the top 5% of data users witch is odd since my billing cycle is to the 15th o_O how i get that high in one day. Unless they where referring to the previous month but i checked and that peak at 1.8GBs so...

EDIT: I'm of the same mind of the article's author. I foresee a class action lawsuit coming out of this. I have recorded calls to and from AT&T employees stating that "unlimited" subscribers that use a lot of data(more than 2 gigs) are "damaging" the network and that when they go over that number, that they're(ATT) having to pay a fine to the gubment.

Here's a workaround for LTE users who find themselves throttled.

I have had an iPhone since 3G and still unlimited but have a iPhone 4 sine it came out

I use between 5-7 gigs a month. Reason? I use Pandora Radio all day long from 6am to 2:30 at work. I also at breaks surf the web. Well mostly come here and see what's up, and check my emails.

I have used over 7gigs several times. I used a out 10-12 the most and that was because I watch a movie while at work, because it was a holiday and it was slow to make the day to faster. This was before Oct of 2011 when data slowing went into effect.

To be honest I would still use over 7gigs monthly if they didn't throttle us down.

Since Oct last year I have. Even getting a text message at least one week before my monthly bill is due saying something like "you are now in the 5% usage and go att pick a new data plan"

Why the fuck am I going to pay $50 for the new 5gig plan and pay $10 per gig over?!?!

This just proves they want everyone off unlimited to make more money off you.

Plus they say with the new plans they have the reason why they rises the usage is because people are hungry for it and are using more data.

It just pisses me off AT&T is doing this.

I have never tethered to a laptop. You watch one movie from Netflix you will kill 2gig in one shot.
Why else do you think AT&T got rid of unlimited? It was the same month where Netflix add the app to the iPhone the AT&T decided to kill unlimited data.

I still remember it to this day that happened. It's because AT&T didn't want people like me doing that every day.
