And if they showed up the next day, I still don't see the issue. Killing the dog still served its purpose. It kept you alive, possibly kept you from passing out and maybe missing the rescue team passing by.
    h/w/p???

I blame auto correct. I certainly didn't capitalize it. It must be all those Brad Pitt searches I've been doing lately. He is so dreamy.

The line, "She's that good a dog, she would've let us, too," made me chuckle.

"She's that good a dog, she'd have done it, too," Conne said.

Hmm... Went shroom picking, and ended up lost in the woods. Lol, why is this not surprising.

                    Let me get this straight...

They wander in the woods regularly to pick mushrooms. They are good enough at it that they can repeatedly make money selling their finds to local vendors. They had even collected enough that day that they were going back for a second batch.

But at the first hint of trouble (ie. being lost) they so quickly forgot everything they knew about foraging and finding edibles in the woods that they were going to eat their dog?

                    Wow. That's special.

Oh, rubbing sticks to start a fire does work. They could have also used the battery in the blackberry to start a fire. AAAaaaannndddd...... Rocks work too, when you use the right ones.

What other option is there when you don't like the way the mushrooms taste?

                          You know what else works?

                          Walking.

You drove in so there's a road not too terribly far away. With any common sense you should know which way you walked away from the road.

Whether it's with a simple wristwatch and the sun or by using stars at night, when you have a clear sky there's no reason to not be able to find north even without a compass. A quick check of the weather up there says that they had at least three days of clear skies before being resuced. Find a heading and walk til you hear traffic.

I think you are leaving out the extreme possibility of them being high. Just my .02.

It sounds like the Dad doesn't really have the ability to lead, and once hypothermia set in with the wife and kid they no longer had half a brain. Add in an injured back and sprained ankle and suddenly the only option is to carve up the closest available meat source.

I'm betting there were plenty of beetles, grubs, and carpenter ants to munch on from that hollow log they were huddled in. They could have minced up some pine needles to adjust the flavor and get vitamin C.

Fun fact of the day: Carpenter ants taste like lemon drops.
