  • Has anyone shot a semi gloss hot rod black?

I'm getting ready to paint my jeep hot rod black. I want a durable semi gloss black (not flat). Does anyone have some good suggestions? Needs to be durable, have a decent sheen, and does NOT chalk up or scratch easy.

call me crazy, but have you looked into the $50 rustoleum roll on paint job? It is super tough, rust inhibiting, doesn't make a mess, and looks dang good.
Did it to my $500 89 Mark VII. Paint was real bad, and starting to rust. I did a quick wet sand, and washed it. Thinned the paint with mineral spirits, and applied thin coats with 4" high density foam roller. have had it on there for a few months now, hasn't faded or chipped anywhere. I dropped my keys on the roof once (work and home keys about 20 damn keys on the rings). Was real impressed that there wasn't a scratch on it.

mind you the bumpers and grill only had one coat on them. two more coats and they will look like the rest of the car.
It's not for everyone, but if you want a descent paint job for cheep its nice.

I have to say that looks damn good for roll on, haha, damn! I have considered it, but I'm just super fucking anal about even application, and I have a good spray gun and everything I need. The only other issue is SEM Hot Rod Black is $59 for their kit, which is enough to do my jeep. I have a lot of real complex bends and tight areas where panels meet inside which I think roll on would make really hard to do.

Is it good enough for an off road vehicle which will get branches scratching it, or should I do the matte clear over it?

Don't get me lying. A buddy shot his 88 gt with it and it turned out nice. It's been painted for over a year now and he drives the piss out of the car. So far it still looks great

sounds like your set up then. I was impressed with the self leveling aspect of the rustoleum. and after the 3rd coat it's coverage is great.

Same paint is at Tractor Supply as Low Gloss RESTORATION Grade Implement Paint. Made by Valspar just like the Blitz Black. They sell Primer, hardener and Thinner there also.

                    It is $50 a gallon.

Heads up: Blitz Black is available as Valspar Implement Black at Tractor Supply for way cheaper than JD sells it.

Dang. Mike beat me to it.

My friend that does high end paint jobs tried twice (two different brands) on my 68 Camaro but the matte clear was streaking so we gave up and gloss cleared it. This was his first time doing a full car matte. He had only done trim pieces before this.
