You can switch the truck into your name while it's financed, but you're right it does require qualifying for the loan.

I was in a similar situation with my f150, mom financed it for me (i was unemployed on paper, needed a truck after my dodge blew up) and when i got verifiable income i just assumed the loan and removed her from the flow of things.

I was on the loan, she cosigned. then she was removed from the loan. maybe i'm a little confused, but that's how it went down.

I'm an auto lender myself, I can tell you that per state law you cannot change the name of a primary borrower without drawing up a new retail installment contract, and I don't know of any lender that would do that without re-approving and qualifying, so it's irrelevant. It's very possible they just changed the account information over to your name, but when the title was issued it is required to be in her name unless you re-signed. "Taking over the loan" doesn't really exist anymore, it's really just refinancing in your name, essentially. I would never do that unless you were actually refinanced, if you're just paying someone else's note you have zero legal means to assume ownership at the time of payoff, exactly like the OP discovered.

You could have peacefully told her she was not allowed on your property to take possession of the vehicle.

                              Just sayin'.
