I was out washing my truck this afternoon and my neighbor's dogs got out. One is a chocolate lab and one is a 7 year old 85lb pit bull/german shepherd mix.
Since they live towards the end of the cul-de-sac, I stopped what I was doing to help corral the dogs at their end so they wouldn't run out into the main street.
As the pitt/shepherd ran by me, I grabbed its collar and immediately the dog turned, growled and tried to bite my arm. I twisted the collar to take up the slack and the dog came up on its hind legs to eat me. It was going for my head/neck and I twisted the collar even harder and shoved my fist into its neck to keep it from being able to bite my arm. It started clawing at my arm and by now the owner's son ran up and yelled at the dog. He grabbed the collar and the dog went down on all fours and calmed down.
The bad thing is if I had have been a kid trying to help, that dog would have had it's way with a kid/weaker person. If I didn't have the strength I have, I would be posting this from the Emergency Room.
I'm glad I didn't have to hurt the dog, and I'm glad I'm the one that latched onto it.
Oh, by the way the dog is a rescue dog and the family is great.
And the only reason the dog attacked me was because it was a Pit. I'm sure the Shepherd part had nothing to do with it :-)
