Wouldn't want THINKING to actually interfere with education. I mean, thank god these boots are banned, since that is where I regularly keep my cell, rather than in a..... POCKET. Next: Ban pants with pockets? No backpacks? I agree that Uggs should be banned on general fashion principles, but this is idiotic.

A ban on "open top" boots at Pottsdown Middle School in Pennsylvania is not a protest against fashion.

In a letter sent home to parents from principal Gail Cooper Wednesday, "open top boots" are banned in classrooms starting next Monday because students have been bringing in contraband items in their boots.

"Following several problems with these items, I have banned the outdoor, open top boots from our classrooms," the letter stated. Under this rule, the ban would include the popular Uggs. "Students may continue to wear outdoor boots to and from school to protect them from cold, snow and ice but need to change into a pair of sneakers or shoes before entering homeroom."

Students have been mainly hiding cell phones in their boots, John Armato, director of community relations for the Pottstown School District, told ABC News. The possession of personal electronic devices in school, including cell phones, is not permitted. Students must keep their devices in their lockers between 7:55 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. If a student decides to text or a phone goes off, these types of events are causing disruption to a positive education atmosphere, Armato said.

"It is a ruling that is made to address a particular situation," Armato said. "If the problem goes away, there is no need for the rule."

The reactions Armato has received have ranged from support for maintaining an educational environment to accusations that the ban infringes upon students' rights to wear certain fashions. He said the ban could change and has been instated on a "as need basis."

The school district does have a mandatory uniform for the middle school students. The school handbook devotes a section to proper attire that states shoes, boots and sneakers with matching-colored laces are permitted. It also says if clothing disrupts learning, the administration has the right to set rules about questionable attire.

If a student does not comply, discipline can range from a reminder sent home to parents on the first offense to possible detention or suspensions at the principal's discretion for repeated offenses.

The policy of no hand held devices during school hours is nothing new, so no surprise there. I find nothing wrong with an institution attempting to enforce policies that have been on the books for decades. Idiotic parents have rendered schools vertually defenseless to a student populace that is increasingly pandered to and rarely disciplined. I support any measure that keeps my children focused on education.

Yeah and banning cold weather clothes is dumb. Even when in school in the NE a lot of classrooms are still chilly/cold - especially in the older schools.

Whatever happened to warnings and then suspension like when I was in school? Punishing everyone is silly. Hell, I got warned for stuff that was already banned (tobacco...etc...etc) before getting suspended 90% of the time.

I see no problems with enforcing that rule too, but suspend/warn the ones in violation...

It sounds like the warnings and increased punishments are in line with standard practice. In fact this only sounds like a small addendum to an already laid out uniform code.

Saggy jeans, pagers, gang colors....these were some of the items banned when I was in school. Again, nothing new. The enforcement then was nearly identical as I recall.

Here's a great example of making another "rule" (law) instead of punishing those responsible for breaking the ones already on the books.

Here's an idea. Punish the kids who are hiding the phones in their boots, rather than banning the boots. This is akin to the TSA confiscating my fingernail clippers. Let's make a bunch of laws and rules that accomplish nothing so that 4% of the people without brains that are saying it's a problem will feel like something is being done, or that they are safer, or ___________ insert some other warm fuzzy contrite and false feeling here.

Well, the boots are banned, we won't have any more trouble with cell phones seeing as that is the only place these cagey teenagers can transport them! Seriously?

It states that they have the option to wear the boots to school, but have to change into footwear that doesn't violate the dress code or interfere with the learning process before homeroom. My kids do this already here in Keller.

Man, I wished someone else would have said that!

                      Oh wait!

If you put an iPhone in your pocket (to use your earlier example) it creates a visible bulge in any pocket I know of. The rule states where phones are supposed to be, so hiding the phone in an open top boot is what they've chosen. Seeing as "Uggs" were specifically mentioned, it would appear that girls are breaking the rule the most. Sounds like they felt a broader stance was necessary. Another instance of the minority fucking it up for the majority.

And I agree that we shouldn't have more laws....in fact I stand behind the belief of one for one (add one/take one)....and I also agree that the offenders should be dealt with individually. But we also have no idea how long this problem existed before this specific action was taken. Perhaps the individual actions weren't having any effect.

Eventually the kids will shove them down their pants and then they'll have to ban pants I guess. Fucking morons.
