That raises a question i guess. When they finally get the ship out of there, and go through it. What is going to happen to all the personal belongings?

I think everyone is forgetting the jewelry onboard. People get dressed up for cruises. There is a bunch of jewelry on that ship right now.
yes but that would be covered by your homeowners (stolen property by a wrecked ship) , or if you bought your ticket with Amex, they would cover it.

Some of these people are going to make out like bandits with the 3-4 times they are going to get paid for their stuff.

So you think the cruise line is just going to gather up all of the personal belongings and have a shipwreck sale on the beach?

yeah, whatever they recover will belong to them, if they have paid out to the original owners. I'm sure their insurance company will actually own it all and sell it to recoop the payouts.

Still 4 grand to replace it, you'd have 10k leftover.
Is your calculator factored in there as well?

I was adding GrayStang's original estimate of 1000 to replace his stuff, to the additional items here.

              1000 + 1500 + 500 + 500 + 500 = 4000

Time to take advantage of cheap cruise rates.

It would depend on what happened to me as to whether that dollar amount is sufficient. If I was on the deck when the shit hit the fan and just stepped onto a boat or swam a few yards to dry land then $14K sounds reasonable.

If I was in the asshole of that ship and had to climb and crawl my way out, wondering if I was going to die or not then no fucking way I'd take $14K.

I'd like to see how they get that sumbitch unstuck and floating again, or however they remove it.

I'm with Al, it depends on the level of shitty that day was, 14K sounds pretty good to me but I travel light and don't have anything really expensive. Hell you could cover my Phone, camera, and Jewlery for 500 easy and still have money left over, LOL. Then again I'm obviously not baller enough to be going on cruises.

Carnival owns Costa and it is interesting how you don't really see a lot of mention of that. I tried to find the article but there is some kind of law that comes into play because where the ship was registered and where it sailed to and from that outlines payment for situations like this and sets absolute max. I remember reading that the most the families can get for the people that died is $75k each. $14k to everyone else sounds a little low but not too bad. I'd guess they would end up being around $25k. Even at $25k each.. at 2700 passengers... that is $67.5 million!! Plus the ship is going to cost a few million to repair/refurbish... The bad PR is going to cost the company a lot of money... That was one expensive fuck up!

14K or you can lawyer up and maybe get more in a few years and give half to your lawyer. probably be better off just taking the cash and calling it a day.

I understand more compensation being given to people who were trapped/traumatized/etc, but what about the people who just kind of said "oh shit", stepped into a lifeboat and got off the damn thing?

$20,000 sounds about right for those people.

Oh, and as if anyone needed another reason to stay the fuck away from any cruise line owned by Carnival.

A simple x2 would have worked just as well.
