DALLAS - Dallas County Commissioners have delayed the vote on a controversial member of the county’s Homeland Security Committee.
Aaron McCarthy was appointed to an initial term in September and was up for another two-year term. But then someone brought up his past.
McCarthy, who also used the name Aaron Michaels, is credited with founding the New Black Panther Party in Dallas. It’s an organization that disrupted school board meetings in Dallas in the 1990s and has drawn criticism from the anti-defamation league.
The county said McCarthy was selected by Commissioner John Wiley Price based on his extensive emergency training and work with emergency agencies that include the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Commissioners delayed Tuesday’s vote while they gather more public input.
