Long story...
This afternoon my mom called, said there was an injured dog in her driveway. Mom is physically handicapped and couldn't get out there to check on the dog. My cousin told mom about the dog, said it'd been laying in the ditch since Thursday. We do wild animal rescue/rehab, so we were the go-to people.
Got there and assessed the dog, a French Bulldog, looked like it had a fractured leg. Was dehydrated but had thirst and after drinking, urine output. It had laid there four days, so internal injuries were not too big a concern - if it had internal injuries it would've most likely died long before now. Took it to the vet in Sulphur Springs. Has a fractured pelvis, but other than that is in decent shape. Doc says keep him in a kennel, give him pain meds and steroids, the pelvis will knit itself together. $241 later, we're on the way home.
Mom called around and found the people who own the dog, she claims the woman told her they'd pay the vet bill and wanted the dog. I talked to the woman, she said she did want the dog, but would "have to talk" to her husband about the vet bill.
Went over there to drop off the dog, the people live in a trashy little mobile home with junk strewn all over the place. The woman came outside to talk to us. Sure enough, she wanted to the dog. About that vet bill, yeah I can't pay you anything, we're broke. I asked if there was anything they could do, she said she'd have to talk to her husband. He came out, was a real asshole. "I didn't ask y'all to take mah dog to the vet. I'm the kind of guy, dog gets hurt, I put a bullet in his head. We aint payin' nuthin!" My wife said 'well that tells us all we need to know'
So 150 miles driving, $241.00 that we really didn't have and six hours of our time, we've got a French Bulldog with a fractured hip. If he survives, he'll have a home. If he dies, he'll die in spite of getting the best care we can give him. We don't do this for people; we do it for the animals - wild or domestic.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'll take the average dog over the average person any day of the week.
