For you folks in that area
Huge traffic mess in Grapevine! Texas 114/121 closing at 8 pm tonight for emergency inspection after truck strikes bridge
Motorists traveling through Grapevine can expect big delays this afternoon -- and those planning to go through the city after 8 p.m. tonight may want to find another route altogether.
Eastbound Texas 114 and northbound Texas 121 is reduced to two lanes after a large commercial truck crashed into bridge supports at the Texan Trail overpass. There is concern that the structural integrity of the bridge has been compromised. The eastbound side of the freeway will be completely shut down tonight for an emergency bridge inspection, Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Tony Hartzel said.
All lanes are still open on the westbound side of Texas 114 -- which also serves as southbound Texas 121, in this area of the Metroplex where the two highways are merged.
The area of this crash is about a mile west of the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport north entrance. Travelers wishing to catch a flight may wish to use the airport's south entrance at Texas 183, near the Euless/Irving border.
For local Grapevine traffic, Texan Trail is shut down in both directions until further notice, and motorists are being detoured to Main Street.
If the bridge is seriously damaged, it could present an interesting dilemma for the transportation department and NorthGate Constructors, the firm hired to rebuild the Texas 114/121 DFW Connector corridor. Part of the Texan Trail bridge is scheduled to be demolished and replaced this year -- including some work scheduled for next week -- so it will be interesting to see if this crash forces officials to either demolish the bridge sooner than previously scheduled, or perhaps make temporary repairs to get the bridge back up to specifications, only to tear it down later.
But that's getting ahead of ourselves. Let's let the inspectors get in there tonight and assess the damage.
