I think its amusing that this debate comes up time and time again...for the same reason...yet another person severely mauled or killed by a Pit Bull. These dogs were bred into existence so they could FIGHT and KILL. Its what they were made to do. I've been around plenty of well mannered lovable Pitts and Rotts...but I would still not allow them around children. They are animals...they see a smaller animal and their brain is programmed to be dominant over it. Case closed. Pitts are dangerous. Hell...I wouldn't trust my docile and sweet border collie unsupervised around people or other animals he didn't know....I've seen him get VERY PROTECTIVE to the point it was like he had become possessed. Kids are going to continue dying because of stupid arrogant owners who say "my dog would never do that" until it does.

            You missed the point.

He may not "go hard", but he's capable.
I used to hear "it's alright, he won't bite" on a daily basis. Once a person uttered those words, I knew they were ignorant pet owners. I assured them that if the animal had teeth, it would bite. It's common sense, find some.

I owned a Corgi that we put down several months ago. I have no doubt that dog could kill a young kid. Sharp teeth and deceivingly powerful bite for his size.

Due to him being sick and it not being treatable is one reason we did put him down. Bless his heart, he tried to have patience but was a grump, sick old dog.

To clarify, you're going to have SOME chance to get to a young kid (3-4 and under to about 2) with a Corgi. However, when ours were preemies - we did not let him around them. A butterfly fart could kill a premature baby.

I disagree. I know that it's true of most dogs, but there are some that won't. The rottie that I had encountered people on a daily basis for 5 years and not a single bite. I took him everywhere, around people and kids. They would walk right up to him and pet him, he never had an issue with it. He was a HORRIBLE excuse for a guard dog, the only thing he had was the reputation of his breed.

                    (Sigh)

Did he have teeth? If the dog has teeth, he can bite.

He might never bite anyone, but he is still capable. To think an animal which has teeth won't use them is how we end up here.

So, bottom line is that all dogs bite, but some might not? Of course they are capable, but the same can be said of just about everything. Everyone is capable of murder, but I am not going to be paranoid about leaving a kid with a family member because that family member might snap.

Let me put it to you this way, I was so sure that my dog wouldn't bite a child, I would have staked my life on it.

My current Rottie is a loveable lap dog, all she wants to do is love you, but she growled at me over a bone once, after she was spayed, she growled at me because she was hurt, she nipped at the nurse at the vet. Those are all warning signs that she is not to be trusted, that under high stress, she gets angry and she also gets angry over territory.

Loveable as she might be under 99% of circumstances, I do not trust her with kids and I do not trust her with people.

My last rottie never once growled at me or another person. He didn't care about his territory, I could drop the fattest steak right in front of him, let him takes two licks and pick it right up, I could reach into his mouth and take it out. Even when he was hurt, he wouldn't growl about it. I went under the house to run some cable and he thought it was dangerous, so he grabbed me by the shoe and drug me out. I trusted that dog more than I trusted most people.
This is how my pit is, it sucks that people feel ALL pits are the same. My boy will never growl at anything only at night (he's scared of the dark so he barks at any shadow). But there are always warnings on how the dog will behave. My pit is like your last rottie, good natured.
