  • Question for parents

For the folks with kids, when is a really good time to start enforcing the idea your child needs to eat what you cook? No making side dinners for him. No letting him snack until he doesn't want to eat.

Our son is 2 and we are trying to get to where we aren't providing a special meal for him, but it is an uphill battle. Are we doing it too young or are we too late and its going to be hard now?

It's a late start, but that said, it's never too late. My kids eat what I cook, or they don't eat at all. Period.

My aunt did that shit for my cousins and to this day it hasn't stopped. It wasn't uncommon for her to cook 3 or 4 different meals because each one of her kids wanted something else. At my house growing up if you didn't eat what was cooked for everyone then your ass just didn't eat. My parents didn't lose one bit of sleep over it either.

my youngest is about 14 months and she eats what ever we eat. Some times if we don't think she ate enough of it we might give her a little something else but thats rare.

yea that is exactly how we want it. I think part of the issue is his preferences are changing. He also is getting to where he refuses things he has never tried before.

The little sucker will eat fruit all damn day though.

Exactly what we DON'T want. I would rather tough out this time than deal with it for the rest of his life.

We gave him our food from the very start. We just think he is starting to get picky and we have to break him of it.

As it's been said, they eat what we serve or they don't eat. We started with baby food. There'll be some screaming fits but you better suck it up and "suffer" through it or you'll end up like a pal of mine who's kid is nearly 9 and will only eat chicken nuggets and french fries. (yes, it's their own damn fault).

Send him to bed without dinner a couple times. It will fix itself pretty quickly. Children are like terrorists. You don't negotiate with terrorists.

When I was about 10 I wanted some damn mashed potatoes. My mom was not so eager to make me some.. But when she did, she made me eat them all.. To this day I cannot eat mashed potatoes, even the thought of it makes me gag.

Also was a time I wanted some chocolate milk, she then filled the glass with nesquick until it mounded over the milk in the cup.

Other then that the only thing I refuse to eat no matter what is meat loaf.

Thats what I did last night. We went back and forth for about 30 minutes until I finally just put the food on the counter and told him he gets nothing else. He went to bed shortly there after.

Also, is it normal for a kid his age to not want to eat alot at dinner. He eats a huge amount at lunch, but has never ate great at night.

Oh, when you send them to bed without dinner, make sure they get the same stuff for breakfast the next day. Don't give them the satisfaction of suspending their hunger for something they don't like in order to get something they do like the next meal.

                              Why no meatloaf?
