FORT WORTH -- A former Army recruiter was sentenced to eight years in prison Monday morning for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in a parking lot at North East Mall in Hurst in 2010.
Staff Sgt. Sergio Gabriel Nava, 31, of Fort Worth, who had been free on $20,000 bail, was taken into custody immediately after sentencing in a Fort Worth criminal courtroom.
State District Judge Mike Thomas sentenced Nava after a pre-sentencing investigation was completed late last year. The sentence had been delayed from a November hearing because Thomas had suffered an illness.
Nava had faced a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The sentence came five months after Nava pleaded guilty in August in Criminal District Court No. 4 to the charge of sexual assault of a child.
Hurst police arrested Nava in September 2010 after a witness called police to report what looked like an assault after seeing two people in a U.S. government car.
The man in the car was identified as Nava, police said.
Nava listed his employer as the U.S. Army, saying he worked out of the recruiting office on Boulevard 26 in North Richland Hills, according to police reports.
Because a juvenile was involved, Hurst police provided few details of the incident.
Nava was acquainted with the girl from high school visits he had made in the area, police said.
While assigned to the North Richland Hills office, Nava was staying in Keller, reports state.
Tarrant County court documents indicate that Nava now lives in Fort Worth. The booking report listed his wife as living in Pahokee, Fla. Domingo Ramirez Jr., 817-390-7763
