  • Any Marine or Army recruiters on the board?

My son will be enlisting when he graduates in May and is compelled to be a Marine or a Soldier, but he has some questions about both branches. I don't want to just take him down to a recruiting station and listen to someone spew filler and fluff to him like what I got when I enlisted. I have given him lots of first hand information about the military in general to try and help him understand what he's getting in to, but since I can't speak directly for how the Marines or Army operates and what to "really" expect I want to make sure he has all his questions answered by someone who is unbiased, not by someone who's trying to pad their recruiting stats. Don't get me wrong, he knows it will be a challenge, especially through boot camp, but he feels strongly that he is ready for it and this is what his calling is. He's had 4 years of ROTC that has helped him prepare physically and mentally for what lies ahead, so at least he's not going in completely blind. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You either didn't read my post or you're just here to be a tool.

If you're referring to JarHeadTex, I already sent him a PM. No response.

He's got a lot of questions. Anywhere from the tribulations of boot camp to duty stations to what each job(MOS) actually does on a day to day basis and what their duties include. He's just wanting someone to give him honest answers without the recruitment up sell. Like I said, I can only give him so much information as I was neither in the Marines or Army and I want him to be able to make the best informed decision possible.

He is a good guy. His office used to be next door to my store. He has moved to the recruiting center off of Hwy 26 in NRH.

Thanks Eric. I'll look up the number to that recruiting station and give him a call. Do you recall his first or last name?

Go anything but Army if you can. They'll be the first branch on the chopping block when we withdraw from Afghanistan.

I'm a Platoon Leader, active Army. I can answer most questions he has. If not, I'll ask my Platoon Sergeant who used to be a recruiter.

As to Yale's comment, everyone is on the chopping block right now. But Army and Marines were the only ones that made their number cuts in the late 90s which is why AF and Navy have been more difficult to get into the last decade. It's getting tighter now across the board.

If he wants to go to college he should look into the Army National Guards SMP program. I wish they had that when I first enlisted.

tough time to be getting in, thats for sure.. they're fixin' to axe a ton of service members with the pentagon budget cuts. Both my brother and brother in law are Marines, (Intel spec and MSOB/Force recon) and they both love it.. both of them had rude awakenings in Basic and swore they were getting out ASAP but my brother recently reupped for another 4 and the BIL has been in now for 10+ and probably wont get out until he retires or is forced out.
