I never served under Clinton but the older guys always talked about the "clinton era army" in a negative tone.

With that Rotc time, he should be able to enlist as an e-4
More than likely due to Clinton's military pay increase record. No one likes to work for years without comparable compensation. When I enlisted Clinton was in office and all the seasoned vets at that time were saying how bad it was with barely being considered "lower class" income level. Then Bush got elected and things changed, raises came at higher percentages and those same seasoned vets started saying we were lucky that we enlisted when we did and we weren't going to have to suffer as much as they did. In Clinton's era, there was a 13.5% wage gap between private sector jobs and comparable military jobs at it widest point. When Bush left the White House the gap was narrowed to 3.4%. Speaks volumes of Presidents who support the military and the Presidents who have felt there are more important places to spend the governments budget.

Obama has had his share of cuts too. The gi bill got slashed starting aug 2011. I'm hurting this month and next.
He plans to cut 10,000 ground troops soon.

We're looking at a loss of 10k soldiers at least thanks to Obama's latest cuts. If he has questions about the infantry let me know. I love the Army

I'm a Marine, active duty for 6 years and now a drilling reservist for almost a year. When I was active I was a helicopter enlisted aircrewman (I flew and worked on helicopters as a door gunner, aerial observer and flight engineer), and am now a C130 enlisted aircrewman in the reserves. If he is interested about either of those feel free to hit me up. Obviously I've been through boot camp, combat training and quiet a few schools so if he has any recruit training questions feel free to post them up.

You at the jrb? As mentioned above there's tons of prior service guys here. Unless he's dead set on a combat mos I'd tell him to research some more technical mos's.

I'd want one of two jobs, flying or fighting. I want my ass in a helicopter seat or a gun in my hands.

He is going into the Marines. Apparently with the reduction in troops coming soon, they are still recruiting, but only taking those with scores of higher than 50 on the Asvab. Thanks for all the feedback and offers of advise for him.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

1 question. How do you NOT score higher than 50 on the ASVAB? I took it 3 years out of HS and still scored a 92.

Congrats to your son, he made a great decision. The Marine Corps is indeed Downsizing, but it is mostly guys who are already in. They have already made changes railroading guys out. We always need new guys coming in. What's his Occupational specialty?

Bumping this back up as we have finally made progress after a years worth of headaches, problems, and delays with MEPS. My son will officially be departing for San Diego no later than this coming Tuesday according to MEPS. He is very excited and ready to get the next chapter of his life started as well as his career.

I'd like to thank all of you who offered up your time and attentiveness in trying to help answer the questions that my son had(especially HarrisonTX and Danny46), and more importantly offering your support.

Now he begins the fun part.

Make sure he double checks his paperwork for the correct MOS when he gets to MEPS on his ship day. Back when I was 21, there were 2 times where my paperwork said Motor Transportation when I was told I could go Crash, Fire, and Rescue.
